The Times Advocate, 2007-12-26, Page 1313 Times—Advocate Wednesday, December 26, 2007 OCTOBER 3 • Ontario voters will be faced with two questions when they head to the polls Oct. 10 — who do they want as their MPP and are they interested in election reform? In addition to voting for their MPP next Wednesday, Ontario voters will decide if they want the province to keep its current and traditional "First Past the Post" (FPTP) voting system, or adopt a new system, some- thing called a Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) voting system. To pass, the MMP referendum needs 60 per cent of the popular vote and must receive at least 50 per cent of the vote in 60 per cent of the province's electoral districts. • The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority will continue its Zurich Drain water testing after a report to council Sept. 24 from ABCA Healthy Watershed co-ordinator Mari Veliz. Veliz said the aim of the project is to engage local citizens to improve water quality, with three approaches that included outreach, stewardship and assessment. OCTOBER 10 • The municipality has named an acting chief administrative officer in the wake of former CAO Larry Brown's departure. Current South Huron operations manager Don Giberson, who joined the municipality Jan. 23, 2006, has been named acting CAO to handle the day-to-day business of running the municipality. He is also con- tinuing his duties as operations manager. Council made the appointment Oct. 1. • "In five years, we'll look back...and won't even think about buying bottled water." That was the message from the Ausable Bayfield Maitland Valley Drinking Water Source Protection Committee chairperson Larry Brown Oct. 3 in Clinton as the new committee was introduced. OCTOBER I7 • Crediting her win to "nine -tenths hard work" and a platform the public could understand, Liberal Carol Mitchell retained her seat in the provincial election as the MPP for Huron -Bruce "This is a dynamic riding, and it's overwhelming," says Mitchell. Mitchell, who raced against well-known former South Huron Mayor Rob Morley, finished with 20, 461 votes (46 per cent of the votes) compared to Morley's 13,566 votes (30.5 per cent of the votes). In third was another well recognized face, former Bluewater deputy mayor and Huron MPP Paul Klopp of the NDP with 5,927 votes (13.3 per cent of the votes). OCTOBER 24 • Provided it receives a 50 per cent grant, council will enter into a study to look at what it can do to improve the appearance of the pond near the MacNaughton Park Dam. The matter arose at South Huron council's Oct. 15 meeting during discussion of a letter the municipality received from Riverside Drive resident Gerald Smith, expressing concerns of the "green mess" in the Ausable River and property owners spraying chemi- cals on their lawns. After discussing the issue, council decided to enter into a study of the dam with the possibility of doing away with it and restoring the area to a natural river course. Acting chief administrative officer Don Giberson said the study would cost about $30,000, but there is a 50 per cent grant available. The munic- ipality's involvement in the study is dependent on being successful at receiving the grant. OCTOBER 3 I • Students at Exeter Public School are proving they can make a difference, exchanging non -recyclable lunch containers for reusable lunch containers. At an assembly at EPS Oct. 24, Bluewater Recycling Researcher and member of the EPS Parent's Association Wendy Chapman explained the importance of making the switch. "The 'new' containers are reusable and reduce the amount of waste that is generated. Following on the three R's principles it is always better to reduce and reuse and lastly recycle." Monthly building report SOUTH HURON - November's building permit report was also passed. Sixteen permits were issued in November, resulting in a total permit value of $2,814,300 and permit fees of $29,823. Of note in the report is the inclusion of the permit issued for the McCann seniors' apartment in Exeter, valued at just under $2.3 million. Development is up this year compared with the same time last year. So far in 2007, 175 building permits have been issued, for a value of $20,343,260.11, and permit fees of $210,894.90. At the same time in 2006, 136 building permits had been issued for a value of $14,135,893.20, and fees of $179,216. Plan Number 7-4-873 R VICTORIAN -INSPIRED TWO STOREY This Victorian -inspired four -bedroom -plus -den home is sure to draw plenty of admiration, with its octagonal turret, wrap-around veranda and charming gazebo. And it contains all the contemporary features a modern family could wish for. The fish -scale shingles near the front door emphasize the exterior's Victorian flavour, as do the classically inspired decorative pillars and slender railings enclosing the veranda. Inside, a double -height foyer leads into the family area, which boasts all the details designed to enhance informal living. To the immediate right of the foyer is a parlour or den with a bayed -out window and a built-in display area for collectibles. A doorway leads outside to the veranda and the octagonal gazebo. The kitchen boasts an outsized central island with an eating bar large enough for the whole family to enjoy snacks or informal meals. A walk-in pantry adds always - welcome space to the storage area and the phone desk is one of those useful features that will quickly prove to be a necessary part of the kitchen — the place to pay the bills and make up the shopping list, as well as use the phone. The great room's entertainment unit flanks the gas fireplace, and french doors open out to a covered terrace. The generously sized dining room, part of the open -living concept, is separated from the kitchen only by a half -wall. French doors here open to the covered terrace — in summer, this will be an ideal place to entertain guests before dinner. The laundry room is neatly tucked away at the rear of the house and has its own covered porch — definitely a wash -day bonus. At the front of the house, just off the foyer, is the pentagonal parlour, a room to be especially enjoyed for its intriguing shape. It could double as a den, library, study, or any other purpose the family can dream of. Upstairs, the graciously proportioned master suite is a private retreat with space to spare. The bedroom has a sloping ceiling, a corner fireplace and its own sundeck for a late-night look at the stars or a place to enjoy the morning paper. A large walk-in clothes closet and a four -piece bathroom complete the suite. The children will want to draw straws for Bedroom No. 4, a charming room with a box window privately placed at the front of the house. The second and third bedrooms are just as large and both enjoy a view of the back garden. All three of the secondary bedrooms share a three-piece bathroom. The upstairs landing, surrounded by a decorative railing, is open to the foyer below. Just off the landing, located over the double garage, is a large unfinished bonus room. Its sloping ceilings and a charming bay window give it plenty of design character. The house measures 65 feet, 8 inches wide and 47 feet deep, for a total of 2,294 square feet of living space.
