(photo/submitted) Junior girls volleyball team keeps improving INGERSOLL - The SHDHS junior girls volleyball team travelled to Medway for a tournament and lost in the 'B' fmal after going to a third game against London Christian. The girls defeated a Woodstock team two straight to head into the finals. The team had a short bench dur- ing the tourney with several players travelling to family Christmas events. The eight players saw lots of court time and definitely `stepped up' to take some big wins. Lots of improvement throughout the day was noticed by the coach- ing staff and the bonding of the players was certainly an extra fac- tor for the wins. Jaemi Douglas played perfectly in the libero position, a new position for the day. Nicole Insley should also be commended for switching to the power position for the remain- der of the tourney and as always led the team with her spirit and ability. Shaylyn Dwyer and Josie McCann were forceful in the middle position along with great serving prowess. Taelor Douglas and Gina Phouttharath excelled at the setting positions and also played strongly in the serving position. Douglas has certainly found her niche in the set- ting position. Alyssa Sweitzer and Alyssa Becker superbly helped with the team's wins for as long as they could stay and they were sorely missed in the finals. Marlee Heywood and Jessica Brock improved greatly in the power posi- tion and dug up lots of spikes and tips. The team's losses throughout the day were very close and a hard fought battle with Stratford Central Goalie change delayed CALGARY — Hockey Canada's semi-annual meeting concluded Dec. 16 in Calgary as the Hockey Canada board of directors voted on a number of proposals impacting hockey at all levels in Canada. The meeting brings together the Hockey Canada Officers, repre- sentatives from all 13 member branches, coun- cil directors, Canadian Hockey League [CHL] and Canadian Interuniversity Sport [CIS] representatives and athlete representa- tives to discuss ways to enhance hockey at all levels in Canada. One of the topics dis- cussed was the imple- mentation of the new rules for goaltending equipment. In response to con- cerns voiced at the minor hockey associa- tion and membership levels, the Hockey Canada Board of Directors and the mem- ber Branches approved a one-year delay in the implementation of new goaltender equipment rules, which will now take effect in the 2009- 10 season. found the girls losing 25-24. League play The team travelled to Stratford Central last week for its first league play. The team could not seem to get any momentum going through- out the day and a lack of movement and covering seemed to be the team's demise. The girls lost five out of six games throughout the day defeating Goderich during their first match and losing the next two along with three games against Stratford Central. Nicole Insley, Alyssa Sweitzer, Taelor Douglas and Josie McCann served very well for South Huron with Alyssa Becker very strong at the net and Douglas and Insley excelling in the serving position. Shaylyn Dwyer and Teri Stuckless also played strongly at the net. • • NE EAR'S SPECIAL Start the New Year off right! Let's get into shape! Incredible savings for the first 50 people!
