• The Municipality of South Huron and Huron OPP
want to ensure residents aren't taken advantage of in
scams by alleged salespeople.
Huron OPP have recently received several reports of
door to door salesmen claiming to be water inspectors
or requesting they be allowed to do a water sample or
purification test, then attempt to sell the homeowner a
purification system.
• It wasn't an issue five years ago, but in the last year
the use of ecstasy and methamphetamines at South
Huron District High School (SHDHS) has come to the
attention of the staff at the high school according to
principal Jeff Reaburn, who was speaking at a commu-
nity forum on drug use Feb. 27.
Reaburn said high school staff are aware of students
using ecstasy, which is both affordable and accessible
and is targeted at both high school and younger stu-
dents with concerns it is a gateway drug towards crystal
meth.

• After more than 30 years in politics, including the
last 14 as Liberal MP for Huron -Bruce, Paul Steckle is
retiring.
Steckle made the announcement March 7 at the
Stanley Township Complex in Varna, a building con-
structed during his tenure as reeve of the former
Stanley Township.

• A new committee is looking into bringing a seniors'
housing complex to Exeter.

SOUTH HURON — Council has
agreed with a proposal to expand
the northern settlement area
boundary of Exeter to include a
43.5 acre parcel of land behind the
Hansen's Independent Grocer and
Canadian Tire properties.
Expanding the settlement bound-
ary involves a change to the South
Huron Official Plan. As part of the
change, a 12 acre parcel of the land
in question will be zoned Highway
Commercial, while 31.5 acres will
be zoned Industrial. The property
now designated Agriculture in the
South Huron Official Plan and
zoned Restricted Agriculture in the
Usborne Zoning Bylaw.
The property
has frontage on
Highway 4 and
Pickard Road.
Agent Pierre
Chauvin, speaking
at council's Dec.
17 meeting on
behalf of property
owner Landrush
Incorporated, said
there is a need for
the expansion in
Exeter to allow for
projected jobs in
the area over the
next 20 years. He
noted Exeter is a
major shopping
centre in Huron
County and three
of the top 10 man-
ufacturers in the
county are in
Exeter. He said the
land in question
can be serviced.
Planner Claire
Dodds said she is
satisfied there is a
need to expand the
Exeter settlement
boundary and was
supportive of the
proposal.
Council passed
first and second
readings of the
zoning bylaw. As
the county is the
final approving
body on the Official
Plan, South Huron
will pass third
reading of the zon-
ing bylaw after it
hears back from
the county.
Dodds told the
Times -Advocate
there has been a
lot of interest in
highway commer-
cial lands in Exeter
in the last few
months and she
suspects the com-
mercial portion of
the lands in ques-
tion will be developed first.
Other council notes:
Committee talk
Coun. Tom Tomes expressed
some concerns and some praise at
the Dec. 17 meeting.
During the councillors' comments
portion of the meeting, Tomes said
he was concerned that council was-
n't fully aware of all the work its
committees are doing and said
councillors needed to be more
"hands on" when dealing with its
committees.
On the other hand, he also praised
the Seniors' Housing Committee for
its work, which is seeing McCann
Redi-Mix construct and own a new
49 -unit seniors' apartment beside
the Exeter Fire Hall at the corner of

Council will further discuss its

mittees are not covered under the

ing is needed in the community Chairperson and South
Huron Deputy Mayor George Robertson said the com-
mittee has discussed the possibility of having a 30 -unit
building constructed in Exeter consisting of one and two
bedroom apartments including a small recreation area
for dances and games and a common area kitchen for
families visiting the seniors. The building would be for
adults 55 and over.

• Huron County council's 2007 draft budget calls for
a 7.68 per cent increase in taxation on a $91.6 million
budget.
The increase amounts to an average rise in residential
taxes of $48.80 per assessment of $100,000.
Members of the public were able to hear details of the
draft budget as county council held committee of the
whole meetings in Exeter and Wingham. County coun-
cillors will most likely vote on the budget in April,
Warden Deb Shewfelt said at last Thursday's meeting at
the South Huron Rec Centre. He told the Times -
Advocate after the meeting that most councillors would
like to see an increase of between three and five per
cent as opposed to the current 7.68 per cent, but added
"we're just kidding ourselves," at the possibility of a
zero per cent increase in taxes. The first draft of the
2007 county budget saw a proposed increase of 16.11
per cent.
• Good news arrived for Crediton and Centralia resi-
dents as the controversial $6.3 million sewer project is
receiving a $1 million grant from the province.
