Nutcracker collection 15 years in the making
By Nina Van Lieshout
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — It's been a
collection 15 years in the
making, and with already
236 nutcrackers in her
collection, Exeter area
resident Karen
Etherington shows no
signs of stopping.
"I love them," says
Etherington, whose fasci-
nation with nutcrackers
began after her sister-in-
law Debbie bought
Etherington, her first nut-
cracker which still sits in
the living room with the
rest of them.
Etherington says
although she never
planned to begin a collec-
tion, it just happened, and
after receiving her first
nutcracker, "It made me
look after that, and then it
catches on. Everyone then
wants to buy one for you."
Etherington also says
another reason for her
collection is her love of
"The Nutcracker Story,"
originally written in the
nineteenth century by
E.T.A. Hoffman. It tells the
tale of a little girl's love of
an enchanted nutcracker.
"I love the story," says
Etherington
But her daughter Robyn
says it's become more
than a collection. "It's an
obsession," she says,
adding that every year
when the nutcrackers are
brought down from the
attic, Etherington
"squeals," with happiness.
When they are pack-
aged up again, usually at
the end of February,
Etherington says, "It's
pretty traumatic,"
although this year for the
first time she was able to
find Halloween nutcrack-
ers to put out early.
Robyn also admits that
the family including,
Etherington's husband
Rick, son Derek and her-
self feed the addiction by
buying Etherington nut-
crackers, along with other
members of the family.
Etherington says she
doesn't really have a
favourite, "I love them all.
They're all different." But
she counts the nutcracker
her son Derek bought her,
a pilot from Germany,
among her favourites.
As for what will happen
with the nutcrackers
when Etherington can no
longer care for them is
"the big joke," leaving the
question, "Who gets them,
I'm not selling them," says
Etherington, adding there
is a lot of sentimental
value in her collection.
Christmas collection —
Exeter area resident Karen
Etherington has collected about
236 nutcrackers
over the past 15
years, saying
every Christmas
season she still gets
just as excited to
set them up in her
living room.
