No body checking for atom players CALGARY - Hockey Canada's semi-annual meeting concluded Dec. 1 in Calgary as the Hockey Canada board of directors voted on a number of proposals impacting hockey at all levels in Canada. The meeting brought together the Hockey Canada board of directors - the Hockey Canada Officers, representatives from all 13 member Branches, coun- cil directors, Canadian Hockey League (CHL) and Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) rep- resentatives and athlete repre- sentatives - to discuss ways to enhance hockey at all levels in Canada. One of the topics from the weekend's proceedings was the discussion on body checking. A motion to allow body check- ing at the Atom level was defeated. The regulation for the intro- duction of body checking will remain at the Peewee level and above in Canada. This ruling will take effect in 2008-09, which means that cur- rent pilot projects in Ontario and Saskatchewan will be able to complete the current season with body checking at the Atom level. As of 2008-09, body checking will be introduced at the Peewee level or above. A further motion to grandfa- ther the rule for Minor Atom players participating with body checking this season was also defeated. The OMHA will continue with body checking at the Atom level for the remainder of this sea- son. Beginning with tryouts in April for the 2008-2009 season there will be no body checking in Atom hockey or below. Although this decision removes body checking from the Atom level at the end of the cur- rent season the OMHA is not ending their commitment to educating coaches and players about body checking. The OMHA has been providing coaches and players with edu- cational opportunities with regards to learning the skill of checking. The following is a summary of the initiatives and programs offered by the OMHA: Coach education • The OMHA Coaching pro- gram has developed a Checking module which has been includ- ed in both the NCCP Coach Stream and NCCP Development 1 clinics. This includes both in -class and on -ice training. Every coach in the OMHA receives instruction on the four -step progression of checking; • For coaches who were certi- fied in the old system prior to the OHF Body Checking Pilot, the OMHA included a module in their Coach Refresher clinic; This clinic was for coaches holding Coach Level certifica- tion which has a three-year expiry; • Coaches holding Intermediate certification in the old NCCP system did not require renewal. The coaches who were work- ing with Atom Rep teams were required to complete a Checking Correspondence Assignment. Ringette scores Exeter Belle A Dec. 9 Exeter 4 versus Chatham 5 Goals: Caelynn DeWeerd, Megan Pavkeje, Miranda Mattucci Assists: Kristen Ferguson, DeWeerd, Carrie Powe, Nicole Insley. Exeter Avalanche Tween A Dec. 8 Exeter 3 versus St. Marys 5 Comments: The Tween A team ran into another tough defense in their latest league game and had a difficult time getting shots on goal. After falling behind 2-0, the lead was cut in half when Morgan Allen ripped a good hard shot low into the net. After St. Marys built a 4-1 lead, Sara McEwan managed to get two more low shots behind the goalie, but a late St. Marys goal sealed the deal. The team will try to get back on the winning track on Saturday when they host St. Thomas at 10 a.m. at the Stephen Arena. Checking speciality clinics The OMHA offers Checking Specialty Clinics for their minor hockey associations (MHA) on request. The clinic is designed both for players and coaches and includes a one hour in -class and one hour on ice -session. This season, the OMHA is including the Checking Specialty Clinic in their menu of Continuing Education Program [CEP] credits. This means, by attending a specialty clinic, coaches can earn credits towards renewal of their NCCP Certification. Association support Due to a number of associa- tions requesting information regarding Body Checking at the House league level, the OMHA surveyed their MHA's regard- ing those which had eliminated body checking. They use this as a tool to share information with their MHA's when considering the future of body checking. Resources The OMHA operates an on-line store and retail space in their office with education resources and tools. Their inventory includes videos and books and includes specific titles on checking. For more information on the decision made by Hockey Canada regarding body check- ing, how the OMHA will move forward, or any other informa- tion regarding body checking contact the OMHA Director of Development, Ian Taylor, at ian.taylor@omha.net or 905- 780-6642.
