RSCA climate change plan approved
EXETER - The Ausable Bayfield Conservation
Authority (ABCA) board of directors has adopted a posi-
tion paper on climate change to help foster a more
resilient watershed to better prepare for future weather
extremes.
The board approved the document "Preparing for
Change" in Ausable Bayfield Watersheds on Nov. 22.
The plan includes 10 action items to help educate
landowners and community residents about ways to
create a stronger watershed to help prepare for the pro-
jected increases in extreme weather events such as
flooding and drought.
The new document emphasizes conservation educa-
tion and education to landowners and staff to create
more awareness about climate change and variability
and to increase mitigation and adaptation initiatives.
Conservation Authorities have a demonstrated ability to
work with landowners and other partners to protect
wetlands, conserve water, encourage sustainable prac-
tices and increase forest cover.
That capacity is required now to help adapt the water-
shed for projected weather extremes, according to the
paper.
The plan concludes by saying "Together, and with a
vision for the future, we can play a positive role in
adapting to climate change and the impacts it brings."
The document approved by the board will be available
