Long touched by warm welcome

EXETER — The staff and students at
South Huron District High School
(SHDHS) made quite the impression on
well known former Exeter resident and
current senior writer and producer for
"The Simpsons" Tim Long, while he was
in town last month, visiting SHDHS Nov.
21.
Long, who lives in Los Angeles with his
wife Miranda, graduated from SHDHS in
1987, and hadn't returned to his former
school in 20 years. It was Miranda's first
visit to the area. The couple was also vis-
iting Long's parents, Earl and Dorothy
Long who live in London.
"I was not expecting it at all," says
Long about the SHDHS welcoming,
adding, "It was sort of surprising and
humbling." Long also says he was happy
to show Miranda where he grew up,
explaining that she equally appreciated
the SHDHS welcoming.

The Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge retail
flyer entitled "Consumer Price
Adjustment" which ran the week of
December 1st incorrectly advertises
the 2008 Chrysler 300 as having a
lease APR rate of 0% for 27 months
and the 2008 Dodge Charger as
having a lease APR rate of 1.99% for
27 months. The correct lease rate is
2.99% for the period of 27 months
for the 300 and 2.99% for the period
of 27 months for the Charger.

their chests greeted Long and his family.
"It was the greatest thing ever. It
couldn't have been cooler," exclaims
Long.
He also commends the band and says
the group of boys were, "I thought fan-
tastic and super funny," saying he
thought it was great that "they got the
letters in the right order."
SHDHS also declared Nov. 21
"Simpsons Day," something Long thought
was "warm and really touching."
Long, who was in Las Vegas this past
weekend for the SpikeTV Video Game
Awards, says he was showing Simpsons
creator Matt Groening, along with a cou-
ple other writers, pictures from his
SHDHS visit, and they seemed "pretty
jealous" of the treatment Long received
in Exeter.
During the first 10 minutes of the
assembly, Long played some of his
favourite Simpsons clips while much
laughter burst throughout the audience.
Long says although he didn't write all
the material shown, it was exciting lis-
tening to the reaction from the crowd.
"It was great. I really enjoyed that. It

was a tribute to the universal morale that
'The Simpsons' brings," says Long,
explaining the show gives laughs to such
a diverse audience.
As for the writers' strike in Hollywood
— no one is laughing.
"It seems to have taken an ugly turn,"
admits Long, who has heard rumours of
the strike lasting as long as six months.
Long says negotiations are not pro-
ceeding smoothly at the moment and he
has been picketing everyday, although,
finding the lighter side of an ugly situa-
tion, he admits picketing has its perks
since he's meeting new people all the
time.
Long predicts the writers' strike won't
wrap up before 2008, but adds, "It can't
go on forever."
Long says his visit to SHDHS was excit-
ing and he is pleased to be able to give
something back to the community.
"SHDHS really feels like home. Where I
began my journey. The kids are unbeliev-
ably optimistic and cheerful." The only
difference now, according to Long is,
"They're much better looking, though."
