Erin Roy was recently selected in an Internet poll as one of three win- ners in the Lenovo com- puter company world- wide contest. Roy will run in memo- ry of her uncle, Const. Rob Plunkett, a police officer with York Region Police who was killed in the line of duty in August. Roy said she clicked on the page "and the rest is history." She submitted an essay with the theme that even though she lives in a small community, "we are still connected and that knowledge doesn't depend on distance or time anyover 6,000 essays from around the world were received during the first phase of the global search. The field was nar- rowed in early October to 18 finalists who were asked to submit a 30 - second video clip demonstrating the most imaginative and innova- tive way they would participate in the Olympic Torch Relay. Highlighting the global nature of the contest, the 18 finalists were from eight countries including: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Germany, India, Italy, Japan and the United States. "We really worked hard to try and send the messages as far as pos- sible," said Roy. Roy will travel to China in late May or early June for her part in the relay, which will be the longest and largest relay in the his- tory of the Olympics. Her run will be in Tibet. "I was just thrilled," said Roy of the news that she had won.
