E.coli, Salmonella and Campylobacter are
three bacteria that can be found in food. It is
important to rinse off all food under running
water to rid the food of some of these bacteria
and possibly pesticides. Rinse all meat, poultry
and fish before cooking as well as all fruits and vegetables. And
wash you hands frequently during the handling and preparing of
food.
Another of the many implications of tobacco smoke is the
destruction of the delicate living and cilia in the respiratory tract.
Cilia are fine projections along the airways that help in the
movement of mucus. When cilia decrease, there can be a build-up
of mucus increasing the risk of pneumonia.
The Canadian Cancer Society advocates that all adults take a
vitamin D supplement of 1000 I.U. per day during the fall and winter
and elderly adults take it all year around. This advice is linked to the
growing body of evidence that links vitamin D with a lower risk of
colorectal, breast and prostate cancers.
There was a good study recently testing the effects of various
strengths of the herb ginseng on cancer -induced fatigue. Strengths
of 750mg, 1000 mg and 2000mg were compared to placebo.
About one-quarter of those those taking the two higher strengths
reported their fatigue levels were immediately better. Be sure your
ginseng is of a good quality.
