By Pat Bolen

GUELPH — In an attempt to reduce costs, Ontario Pork
announced Nov. 16 it is downsizing its staff by 25 per cent as
well as eliminating some services and re-allocatting funds to
combat problems faced by the industry.
Ontario Pork director of communications and marketing
Keith Robbins said there will be both internal and external cuts
being made with the internal reductions covering services such
as janitorial, maintenance programs, promotional materials
and reduced audiences for consumer campaigns.
Externally Robbins said services such as the Trucker Quality
Assurance program will be delivered by other groups. "The
service is still out there, it just won't be delivered by Ontario
Pork."
Another service offered by Ontario Pork that will be cut is the
Prior Notice program which was required by the Bio -Terrorism
act of 2002 and which required truck drivers crossing the
Canadian -American border to fill out forms in advance. While
Ontario Pork has filled out the forms up until now, Robbins
said the truckers will now fill out the forms themselves.
Also cut are services such as producer education and confer-
ences to train bankers on agricultural lending. "We'll look to

EXETER — "A kid from Exeter can do anything," says Tim
Long, a well known former Exeter resident, and current senior
writer and producer for "The Simpsons," who was in town last
week.
Long, who lives in Los Angeles with his wife Miranda, visited his
parents Earl and Dorothy Long in London and made a special trip
to his old high school.
In 1987 Long graduated from South Huron District High School
(SHDIIS), and hadn't returned to the school in 20 years, although
he has made several trips back to the area over the years.
During the visit, the students at SHDHS were entertained for
about an hour Nov. 21, during an assembly focused on laughter,
memories and excitement, with some encouraging words, usually
followed by more laughter. Long was greeted with much applause,
"The Simpsons" theme song played by the SIIDHS band, which
Long says "kicks ass" and a group of boys who stood up on the
bleachers with "Go Simpsons" written across their chests.
Nov. 21 was declared "Simpsons Day," with several staff and
students dressed up as characters from "The Simpsons," along
with two signed Simpsons blow-up characters auctioned off, sup-
porting the Huron County Christmas Bureau.
During the assembly, Long ran some of his favourite Simpsons
clips. "The Simpsons" is the longest -running American sitcom, cel-
ebrating its 20 year anniversary this year.
