The dry summer experienced across the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) extended through October. The watershed experienced approximately 50 millemetres or two inches of rainfall over most of the watershed, with the exception of areas west of Clinton which received approximately 75-90 millemetres or slightly more than three inches. Although a slight improvement in stream flow has been observed in some watercourses, flows remain low. Over the past three months the Ausable River watershed has received only about 65 per cent of the normal amount of precipitation, while the Bayfield River watershed has received approximately 80 per cent of the normal amount of precip- itation. For October, stream flows varied from 20 to 40 per cent of the lowest average summer monthly flow in the Ausable River watershed, to 80 per cent in the Bayfield River watershed. Although the flows in the Bayfield River appear to be improving, October flows were only about 20 per cent of the normal for the month. It is hoped that conditions will improve heading into fall, according to Alec Scott, ABCA water and plan- ning manager. "We began to experience more fall -like weather patterns through October that are typical to the Great Lakes region. Provided that we con- tinue to experience this seasonal weather through November, precipi- tation amounts should increase and subsequently provide some flow back into local streams." WRT Chairperson Jim Ginn said that, until that time, conservation of water remains important to prevent further reduction in water levels. "We continue to encourage a vol- untary 20 per cent reduction in water use by everyone in the identi- fied areas based on the current con- ditions," he said. "We appreciate the role everyone plays in cooperating to preserve our water supply and protect the envi- ronment." Monitoring of groundwater levels in support of Low Water Response has shown a rapid decline in the shallow aquifers across much of the watershed throughout the year. These aquifers act as reservoirs for water supply throughout typical summers; however, in some areas, the water table has dropped low enough to dry up some domestic wells. The WRT is seeking information from area residents impacted by dry or reduced volume wells. Contact the ABCA office at 235- 2610 or 1-888-286-2610 if you have experienced problems with your well water supply this year. ABCA staff will continue to monitor rainfall and streamflow data and keep the public informed of any changes in watershed conditions. A dynamic low-water advisory alert tool on the website of the ABCA at www.abca.on.ca alerts people to low-water advisories in effect in the watershed.
