Habitat gets boost for the future
GODERICH — Habitat for
Humanity Huron County (HFHHC)
recently received a boost with a
$10,000 pledge from the Goderich
Knights of Columbus in Goderich.
The money is earmarked for the
construction of the Habitat house on
Bruce Street in Goderich and was
presented at a recent beef barbecue
in Goderich.
In addition, the Knights of
Columbus were instrumental in pro-
viding support for the luncheon by
providing the use of their hall and
kitchen facilities as well as con-
tributing volunteer labour.
It is the support from organiza-
tions such as this that has enabled
HFHHC to build three homes over
the past three years in Huron
County (Clinton, Wingham and
Hensall).
The Lions Club of Goderich has
also pledged a donation of $10,000
over two years.
HFHHC chairperson of the board,
Terry Taylor, states, "Without the
generous support of people, busi-
nesses and organizations across the
county, we will not be able to
achieve to the standards we have
set."
Faith groups, businesses, service
clubs, and individuals have all been
generous in empowering Habitat to
fulfill their mission across Huron
County.
The Goderich campaign will con-
tinue over the coming months in
order to reach fundraising goals that
will support both the house build
and the ReStore in 2008.
Fundraising committee chairper-
son Glenn Hayter states, "Watch for
many more campaigns across the
county, particularly in the Goderich

area. The committee and the board
will be busy to ensure the necessary
funds and materials are in place in
time for the Goderich projects."
The newest member of HFHHC
board, Deb Homuth of Exeter, is
anxious to make her mark.
Homuth is a long time educator
who states that her reasons for
becoming involved include the
notion that acts of service and pitch-
ing in to make a difference matches
her own value system.
"Young people see the example
being set by adults who give of their
time and their pocketbooks so will-
ingly," states Homuth,
She goes on to say, "I have always
admired the work of Habitat from a
distance, most especially the 'hand
up not a hand out' philosophy. I
have lived in Exeter most of my life
where my husband Stu and I are
raising six boys. I enjoy hockey,
baseball and golf with my boys and
have a lifelong love of drama and
dance."
Homuth is looking forward to con-
tributing to the work of Habitat for
Humanity's Outreach and Public
Relations Committee.
With the 2009 house build slated
for Exeter, she states, "The greatest
challenge (and our greatest
strength) is our geography. I think
there are lots of people like me will-
ing to give of their time and support
of Habitat's work but people need to
see reasonable ways of doing that."
Homuth explains that each build in
a different part of the county is a bit
like starting the organization all over
again as local volunteers are recruit-
ed for specific builds.

THEY LOOK FABULOUS CUT, AFTER THEY SET, IN FINGER LIKE
SQUARE SHAPES. I HAVE USED THEM FOR A NUMBER OF
YEARS ON MY CHRISTMAS BAKING TRAYS AND I KNOW THEY
GET SNATCHED UP QUICK. GIVE IT A TRY.

GRAND BEND — A stop at a Grand Bend service sta-
tion and convenience store by a 52 -year old Grand
Bend man ended in his arrest Nov. 10 just before 9
p.m. The man was paying for some items inside the
convenience store when an OPP officer, who was in
line behind the man made some observations about
the way the man was acting. Subsequently before the
male could drive away, the officer spoke with him and
based on his conversation, and observations, arrested
the man for care and control of a motor vehicle while
impaired. Lambton OPP laid a further charge of driving
with over 80 mg of alcohol in his system after the
male's readings were twice the legal limit. A court date
has been set for Dec. 31.
