(photo/Pat Bolen) Comeback win for Hawks By Pat Bolen TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF EXETER — Three goals in the third period Friday night in Mitchell powered the Exeter Hawks to a come -from -behind 6-5 win despite being outshot. Exeter's Sunday night game against the Mt. Brydges Bulldogs was postponed due to the death of Bulldogs assistant coach Andrew Downer. Although Exeter coach Deryk Howard said the game wasn't one of the Hawks' best played games it was a valuable team building victory. "We got stronger as the game pro- gressed," said Howard. "Even though they may have edged us in shots, the scoring chances were about equal." With the Hawks gaining five of their last eight potential points, Howard said "we're starting to get over that mountain of believing in ourselves...it just showed that we're getting there." Josh Wood gave Exeter an early 1-0 lead three minutes into the game but Mitchell replied with three goals in three minutes before the period was over to take a 3-1 lead into the second. Wood added his second of the game at 4:12 of the period but two minutes later Mitchell again made it a two -goal lead. After Brandon Dymond cut the lead to 4-3 before the end of the period, the Hawks fired three more in the final peri- od. Drew Bayliff pulled the visitors even just under two minutes into the period but Mitchell again took the lead at 8:02. But a shorthanded unassisted effort from Exeter's Jacob Schmidt at 14:12 pulled them even once again and Wood's goal at 17:57 completed his hat trick and gave the win to Exeter. Wood had four points on the night as did Dymond with three assists to go with his goal. The Hawks have one game this week when they host Lucan Friday at 8:30 p.m. A new addition to the Hawks' lineup is defenceman John Glover who played Junior 'C' in New Hamburg. "He's a 20 year old and he brings expe- rience...we are a little young and it's nice to bring in another veteran player," said Howard. Ringette fans make Swedish friends International meeting — Local ringette players Amanda and Alana Hodgert, along with mother Michele, had the chance to visit the dressing room of the Swedish team at the recent World Ringette Championship in Ottawa. (photo/submitted) By Pat Bolen TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF OTTAWA — Three local ringette fans made some international friends recently when they trav- elled to Ottawa to watch the 2007 World Ringette Championship. As well as seeing elite ringette played, Michele Hodgert and daughters Amanda and Alana were in Ottawa from Oct. 30 to Nov. 3 to see Canada take on the United States, Finland and Sweden. The Hodgerts saw all the games in the tournament, which had Finland as the dominant team going in, which they lived up to Nov. 3 by defeating Canada 5-4 in overtime to win gold. Sweden had won its first ever medal at a world champi- onship event earli- er in the day by defeating the United States 10-9. The Hodgerts started cheering for Sweden early in the tournament, which was noticed by the team's play- ers, who motioned the girls to sit behind the Swedish bench. After the Swedish game against Finland, which outshot the Swedes 127-20 and outscored them 42- 2, the Hodgerts were invited back to the Swedish dressing room to meet the players. Amanda was given a broken stick signed by player Linda Bjorling, who had scored in the game. As well as several other sou- venirs, the Swedish players gave the Canadians tips on ringette. "All through the games, the players were waving at the girls," said Michele. "We were cheering loud and they loved that Canadians were supporting them." Two of the play- ers from Canada's team, Jenn Wakefield and Jacqueline Gaudet, will be playing locally in Mitchell Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. when their Cambridge Turbos team, from the National Ringette League takes on the Montreal Mission.
