Minister comments on National 4-H month
OTTAWA — With November being
National 4-H month, To kick start
the celebrations, 4-H members,
leaders, supporters and alumni
wore green Nov. 1, for "Show Your
4-H Colours" day.
4-11 is Canada's largest rural -
based youth development organiza-
tion, with more than 2,200 active
clubs across Canada. By offering
activities such as crafts and wood-
working, drama and livestock care,
4-H helps youth develop self-confi-
dence and learn a wide variety of
skills. Not only does 4-H create
learning opportunities for today's
youth, it is also helping to shape the
young adults of tomorrow.
The Canadian 4-H Council, created
Food retailers to
receive funds
OTTAWA — Canadian food retail-
ers are receiving $360,000 in fund-
ing for the Canadian Federation of
Independent Grocers (CFIG).
The funding will be used to train
store owners and managers on a
new food safety system, and to help
small producers and processors
promote their products to grocery
retailers, announced Minister of
Agriculture and Agri -Food and
Minister for the Canadian Wheat
Board Gerry Ritz.
Under the Canadian Food Safety
and Quality Program, the CFIG
received $284,700 to provide store
owners and managers with the
necessary training to implement a
new Hazard Analysis Critical
Control Points (HACCP) based food
safety system in their stores.
The food safety system is one
component of a Canadian Retail
Food Safety Program being devel-
oped jointly by the CFIG and the
Canadian Council of Grocery
Distributors (CCGD) with $1.2 mil-
lion in total funding over the last
three years from Agriculture and
Agri -Food Canada.
In addition, the CFIG received
$75,000 under the Advancing
Canadian Agriculture and Agri -
Food (ACAAF) Program to develop
the "Destination Canada" pavilion
for Grocery Innovations Canada
2007, which ran October 29-30 in
Toronto.

retailers from across the country
during the two-day exhibition.

The Minister of Agriculture and

Canadian Wheat Board Gerry Ritz,
released the following statement.

I wish 4-H all the best with its
recently launched volunteer recruit-
ment campaign as it aims to re -con-
nect with its former members,
encouraging alumni to `Join Again, -
says Ritz, adding, "I thank the
Canadian 4-H Council for its hard
work in helping to make this hap-
pen. I look forward to an exciting
future for Canada's young farmers.

this future by continuing to put

Denfield Livestock Sales
Denfield Livestock Market Report for
Tues., Nov. 6. The market at Denfield
Livestock Sales met a good demand at
steady prices on all classes of fed cattle
on a light offering. A good offering of
cows sold steady, a large offering of hol-
stein bull calves traded actively at steady
prices.
David and Glen Minielly, Wyoming sold
eight head average weight 1379 average
price 73.15.
