Wednesday, November 14, 2007 Times -Advocate 13 Lucan community centre kitchen opens with a new look By Nina Van Lieshout TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF LUCAN — The Lucan Community Memorial Centre newly renovated kitchen was officially opened Monday. Several dignitaries were on hand to celebrate, including Lambton- Kent-Middlesex MPP Maria Van Bommel, Lucan Biddulph Mayor Tom McLaughlin, Lucan Biddulph Ward 1 Coun. Wayne Hall, Lucan Community Memorial Centre arena manager Ken Needham and Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) representatives Job Tromp and Sheila Simpson. The project received $40,000 from the OTF and $10,000 from the Lucan Lions Club, with Lucan Biddulph budgeting the remaining amount. The renovated kitchen cost approximately $105,000. They budgeted $110,000. In a statement released Monday, Van Bommel says, "I am delighted to see the improvements made to the community centre, adding, "This will ensure the centre continues to be a hub of activity and a modern facility for all who use it." McLaughlin says, "This grant will help us serve our community needs." Needham agrees, explaining, delighted with the new kitchen. "The new equipment means less prep time and more efficient operation for catering groups. We now have increased inquiries regarding rentals of our facil- ity because of our new kitchen facilities and we are proud of that." "Our user groups are Remembrance services in Granton By Muriel Lewis GRANTON CORRESPONDENT GRANTON - At the Granton -Wesley United Church on Sun., Nov. 11, pastor Paul Vollick led the service and the message was entitled 'ques- tions of life.' The scripture readings were from Luke 20 and Second Thessalonians 2. Elizabeth Herbert lit the Christ candle. The min- istry of music by the choir was Peace for the Children. Stan Wyatt read the names of the war veterans and silence was observed. Time was shared with the young people of the congregation. Unit 1 members hosted the muffin social before the ser- vice. Unit 2 hosted a soup and sandwich lunch after the service before the cenotaph service at 12:30 p.m. uCW Granton -Wesley UCW Unit 3 met at the home of Cheryl Wright on Tuesday evening, Nov. 6, with 15 members attending. Ruth Cook and Verna Mills led the program on the theme remembrance and peace. The Scripture reading Psalm 85, 8-13 was followed by a prayer by Verna. Ruth shared the need for remembering and for each one to be a messenger of love. They closed with a song by Daniel O'Donnel entitled Let There Be Peace. President Elizabeth Garrett led the business and the election of officers for 2008-09 and thanked the members for their ongoing support. The meet- ing was closed with prayer. Lunch was served by Ruth and Verna and hostess Cheryl. At St. Pauls Anglican Church in Kirkton on Sun., Nov. 11, Reverend Dalice Sim led the service of morning prayer. The message was about peace and laying one's burdens before God to achieve peace. Fraser Urquhart read the lessons. Remembrance Day service The Remembrance Day service held at the Granton cenotaph on Sun., Nov. 11 at 12:30 p.m. was led by the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 540 from Lucan. Poppy chair Barbara Tuxford spoke briefly and told about the meaning of the blood red poppy of Flanders which has become a symbol of unselfish sacrifice and a means to remember and honour those who gave their lives so that the world might attain peace. The veterans affairs wreath was laid by Barb Shipley; Province of Ontario wreath by Councillor Alex Westman; RCL Branch 540 by Gary Melvin; World War II veterans by Gary Raymond; Korean veterans by Harold Rayne; 2007 veterans by Barb Tuxford; in memory of Wm. Lambourn by great nephew Josh Lambourn; the O'Connor family by Kelly O'Connor; Pam and Chris (in memory of John O'Connor); and Granton -Wesley United Church by Stan Wyatt.
