NOVEMBER 11, 2007 Remembrance Day Banquet will be held at the Hensall Community Centre Social Hour 5 p.m. - 6 p.m. Dinner 7:00 p.m. Our guest speaker will be Ms. Laura Noakes who attended the Ceremonies at Vimy Ridge last spring. I look forward to attending Remembrance Services, as it reminds me what the Legion stands for; its past and its future, its many memorable comrades. I have the greatest respect for the Legion and what it stands for. I cannot think of another organization that is in the fore- front for the well-being, care and comfort of our veterans and their dependents. Every year, Canadians pause in a silent moment of remembrance for those who have served and contin- ue to serve our country during these times of war, conflict and peace. We pay respect and honour to those who fought and died in the first and second World War, the Korean War, and those who are still serving today. More than 1,500,000 Canadians have served in our country and more than 100,000 have died. They gave of their lives and their futures so that we may live in peace. If we do not, the sacrifice of those 100,000 lives would be meaningless. They died for us, their homes, families and friends and the collection of traditions that they cherished and believed in; they died for Canada. War has touched Canadians of all ages, races and social classes. Fathers, sons, daughters, sweet- hearts were killed in action with thousands returning home with physical and mental anguish brought on by war. For many of us today, war is just a conflict seen through the lens of a tele- vision camera, or read as a journalist's account. Our closest physical and emotional experience may be the discovery of wartime memorabilia in family attics, picture albums or through old uniforms, badges, medals and diaries. For those of us born in peacetime, all wars seemed far removed from our daily routines. By remembering their service and their sacrifice, we recognize the tradition of freedom these men and women fought to preserve. LARRY UYL, President and Poppy Chairman REMEMBER... by Greta Zwaan (Exeter) The cold November wind blows, While memories stir again Thoughts of strife and hardships, Of anguish and pain. Though time has dimmed the heartaches, The imprints are still there. The poppies at the grave -side, The comrades, knelt in prayer. So many men have fallen, So many lives were lost, The price to pay for freedom Exacts a heavy cost. Dare we forget the battles That raged on foreign shores, And live in ease and comfort, Far from the cannon's roar? Lest we forget the reason, Lest we forget the tears, Lest we forget the message Passed on throughout the years: We gather to remember, To honour those who've died, And thank God for the veterans Who still stand at our side. They fought in quest for freedom, They conquered, then returned, Today we pay them homage, A tribute they have earned! We wear the blood -red poppy, The pipes sound the lament, We pause for just a moment, The message has been sent: "Lest we forget," it beckons, "Lest they have fought in vain, Remember -- oh, Remember! Lest we face war again!"
