In the bronze medal game they played Medway and after regulation time, the result was 0-0, with neither side able to capital- ize on their chance. A further 10 min- utes of overtime did nothing to change the situation. The game was decided on penalty strokes, with each team having five players attempting to score. South Huron defeated Medway 3- 1 to win the game and take the medal. Goal scorers were Sandra Gregus, Lauren Haberer and Janita Pfaff. Michelle Boere did a great job in net, only allowing one Medway goal. In semi final play, Goderich gained revenge for losing Huron -Perth by defeating South Huron 1-0, the goal being scored by a penalty stroke. In pool play, the Panthers started off by losing another tight game to Medway by a 1-0 score in another game that could have gone either way. In the second game, the Panthers defeated Sarnia Collegiate 11-0. Scorers were Staci Miller with two, Kristen Ferguson with two and Lindsay Mills, Melissa Cronyn, Michelle Hall, Emily Lacasse, Lynn Weber, Marlee Heywood each with one. Finally, Panther's goakeeper Boere played forward and scored the first goal of her career. Michaela Ondrejicka capably looked after the net - minding. Throughout the tournament, Carly Schroeder was a shining example to the rest of the team as she played with tenacity. Goderich won the silver and Parkside won the gold and both teams will par- ticipate in OFSAA this week. Two wins for improving Hawks By Pat Bolen TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF EXETER — Justin Young's shootout goal Friday night at the South Huron Rec Centre lifted the Exeter Hawks to a 5- 4 win over the visit- ing West Lorne Lakers and gave the Hawks their first back-to-back wins of the season. The win followed the Hawks 6-4 win in Lucan Oct. 24 and gives the Hawks a 4- 7-0 record. The Hawks jumped out to a quick lead against the Lakers with two goals in the first period from Drew Bayliff and Josh Wood for a 2-0 lead going into the sec- ond period. "We played a good game plan and we came out really strong," said Exeter coach Deryk Howard. "It's early in the year and we're hav- ing a hard time com- ing out strong and staying strong for 60 minutes." The Lakers responded in the second with a goal at 3:41 but Jake Jeffrey put the Hawks Bouncing puck — Exeter Hawk goalie Aaron Bedard dives on a loose puck before West Lorne Laker player Matt Bunoza gets his stick on it Friday night at the South Huron Rec Centre. The Hawks defeated the Lakers 5-4 in a shootout. The Lakers took over for the rest of the period, though, firing three goals, including a short- handed marker at 13:53 from Matt Willis for a 4-3 lead going into the third. And Troy Elder's lone goal of the final period was enough to send the game to overtime which was unable to break the tie, forcing the shootout. After the Lakers had missed three chances and Woods and Bayliff failed to score it was Young who finally scored to give the win to Exeter. Against Lucan, the Hawks got two goals in the first period from Justin Cann and one from Jeffrey with Kevin Dean replying for Lucan. Paul Bowden extended the Exeter lead in the second period to 4-1 before the teams exchanged five more goals in the third. After Steve Gingerich made it 5- 1 for Exeter, two goals from Dean cut the lead to 5-3 before Jeffrey again gave the Hawks a three -goal lead. Drew Henry got the Irish to within two goals at 16:51 but it was as close as they got as the Hawks took the 6-4 win. Howard said the Hawks still aren't where they need to be with their defence but they will adjust as the season pro- gresses. The Hawks are on the road this week- end starting Friday night when they visit Thamesford at 7:30 p.m. before a game in Central Elgin Saturday at 8:15 p.m. Howard said Thamesford is one of the strongest teams in the league and will be a good test for the Hawks. The Irish host Mt. Brydges tonight (Wednesday) at 7:45 p.m. and visit Central Elgin Friday night, also at 7:45 p.m. Exeter skaters EXETER — The Exeter Skating Club (ESC) has had a successful start to its season in several com- petitions. The club has over 130 members this season, including 70 Canskaters with over 40 juniors and seniors returning and some new members to the club as well as two synchronized teams and a strong positive motivated executive. "We have an exciting season ahead of us," says coach Kathy Mcllwain. Skating programs for the club include Canskate, Starskate, Learn to Skate synchronized skating as well as Adult and Masters synchronized skating. Anyone can still join the club by calling Mcllwain at 235-4751 or Sharia Moore at 641-4671. A program assistant is needed since the club relies on its junior and senior skaters to help assist in the development of the younger Canskaters. Anyone inter- ested in becoming an assistant can contact the club for a training day. The ESC provides Skate Canada sanctioned Learn to Skate programs taught by NCCP certified coach- es. This prepares new skaters for hockey, ringette, figure skating or recreational skating. Canskate is a Learn to Skate program for begin- ners of all ages that teaches fundamental movement and basic skills. The program empha- sizes fun and continuous movement and is taught in group lesson format. Awards and incentives are used to motivate skaters to achieve and develop their skills as well as keep their interest high. Junior/Senior program Starskate offers the opportunity for skaters of all ages to develop fimda- mental figure skating skills in the area of ice dance, skills, freeskate and interpretive skating. This program is taught in group and private les- son formats. Competitive programs can be fun and challeng- ing for athletes seeking to continue in a competitive environment. While pro- gression to high levels of competition and increased skills are the ultimate goal, skaters' parents and coaches should never lose sight of what is important–the personal growth and development of the ath- lete, Mcllwain says. Professional NCCP certi- fied coaches for the club are: McLlwain-canskate Director /club coach; free- lance coaches Michelle Roy, Jen Overholt and Jeff Loosley; Canskate coach Abbey Oke and synchro coach Melissa Hendrick. There are also a variety of guest coaches through- out the season. "There have been over 70 badges and stages already passed by the Canskaters this year. We are off to a positive, suc- cessful start to our sea- son, thanks to a dedicated and committed executive. We have a variety of lev- els of skating at our club, but for the size of the club, we have a very suc- cessful program. There is high level of performance and talent from our skaters and that is in evi- dence in our test and competition results," said Mcllwain. "We do our best to give each skater the opportu- nity to achieve their per- sonal best, while enjoying the fun, social and posi- tive environment. Skating is a discipline sport and an excellent way for my skaters to gain self confi- dence, sportsmanship and many other life learning qualities."
