EXETER — "Love and Sorrow" is the culmination of 10 years of poetry
writing by Exeter's Christine Wedge.
Wedge, 26, recently completed her first book of poetry, which she
describes as 24 of her favourite poems she has written in the last 10 years.
Wedge says she started writing poetry about 10 years ago when she
became inspired by reading the poetry of her favourite musician and biggest
influence, Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins. About four months ago,
Wedge realized she had nearly enough poems to form a book — she started
writing more and came up with the idea for "Love and Sorrow," for which
she has a copyright and is now in the beginning stages of seeking a publish-
er. Wedge considered self -publishing, but discovered it is expensive.
The poems in Wedge's book are presented chronologically, showing the
evolution of her writing. She started out writing in a "rhyming couplet" for-
mat, but says she has gotten away from that and uses more of a "free verse
style" now.
The book is divided into two sections — "Love," consisting of 10 poems,
and "Sorrow," which has 14 poems.
In describing how she writes, Wedge says, "Just let it come to you .
that's when you get the best material." She said the ideas don't come if she
thinks too much about writing.
She describes writing as a way for her to relax and "to get everything out."
In addition to poetry, music is a big passion for Wedge, and she is also a
singer hoping to turn some of her poems into songs. Wedge has a wide inter-
est in different music styles, including alternative, funk, electronic and
rhythm and blues. She has posted some of her demos on her web page,
www.myspace.com/kitnlil, and has placed some of her poems on her blog.
Wedge has shown some of her poems to people and says she has received a
good response so far.
