Still lots of enthusiasm for annual agriculture fair 2008

ZURICH CORRESPONDENT
ZURICH - Three couples from St. Boniface parish in
Zurich travelled to Windsor on Sun. Oct. 28 to attend a
special wedding anniversary Mass held at Our Lady of
Guadalupe Church with Bishop Fabbro.
Recently celebrating their 25th anniversary were Deb
and Gerry Pennings, Teresa and Martin Van Raay.
Martha and Willie Overholt have been married 50 years
and were among several other couples from various
places who were celebrating being married 10 to 60
years.
Annual Fall Supper
St. Peter's Lutheran Church are planning to have their
annual Fall Supper on Sat., Nov. 17 at their fellowship
hall beginning at 6 p.m. Adult tickets are $12 and chil-
dren six to 12 years are $6 (bought in advance only)
from Mary Walker -Thiel 236-4697 or Bob Krueger 236-
4337, or Karen Schade 237-3223 at the Hardware Store
in Zurich.
The Ladies Auxiliary meeting will be held at the
Bluewater Rest Home on Tues., Nov. 6 at 6:30 p.m.
Membership dues of $5 will be collected for 2008.
Please plan to attend and ask a friend to come as well.
The family of Jerome and Carmel Sweeney (about 20
in total) get-together was held over the weekend at the
Boyle farm in St. Augustine to celebrate Thanksgiving
(`better late than never') as all our children attended
with their families from Toronto, London, Georgia,
Grand -Bend, Oakville and the Zurich area.
Anyone wanting to attend a scrap -booking day at the
Zurich Mennonite Church this Sat., Nov. 3 from 9 a.m.
to 6 p.m. are to call Janet Willem at 237-3179 as soon as
possible.
Daylight savings time
Don't forget to turn your clocks back one hour on
Saturday night. (Nov. 3) so you won't be late for church
on Sunday morning.
The free Flu Shot Clinic will be held at the Bluewater
Complex in Zurich on Thurs., Nov. 8 from 5 p.m. to 8
p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend and must bring
along your health card.
Mike and Alice Scott spent last week visiting their
daughter Vikki and family in Terrace Bay.
Happy belated 40th birthday wishes go out to Cathy
Rau. The staff at St. Boniface School held a delicious
potluck lunch last week in her honour. Recently her
family went to Port Huron to celebrate Cathy's birthday.
Immaculate Heart of Mary C.W.L. parish bazaar will
be held in their auditorium on Sat., Nov. 10 from 10
a.m. to 2 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend; there will
be lots to do, see and buy for both the parents and chil-
dren.
St. Peter's C.W.L. at St. Joseph will be having their
annual parish penny sale in their hall on Sun., Nov. 4
from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Come out and bring a friend. All
are welcome to attend.
The St. Boniface C.W.L. Bazaar was another big suc-
cess last Saturday with lots of winners on the penny sale
table plus other draws as well. The money tree worth
$50 was won by Dara Hartman of Mt. Carmel. The
baby afghan went to Ellie Fenick in Hensall. The gro-
ceries went to Huron Park, won by a Bromley girl.
Sun., Oct. 28 was Sharon Lagerwerf's last day of
working at Queensway Nursing Home in Hensall. She
had been working at Queensway for 10 years and will
be missed by the residents and staff.
Lions Club
The Lion's Club held their monthly dinner / meeting at
Erb's country Kitchen on Oct. 24 with 18 members
attending.
President Lion John Becker welcomed everyone which
included four new members and one guest from the
Kitchener -Waterloo Lions Club.
The next Blood Donor Clinic held in Zurich at the
Complex will be Fri., Nov. 9 from 5 - 8 p.m. Come out

Precious Blood Parish in Exeter C.W.L. penny sale is
coming up on Wed., Nov. 7. Doors open at 5 p.m. in
their hall and admission is $1.
Community cooking and friendship
The next community kitchen cooking night at the
Lutheran Church hall is on Tues., Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. For
more info and to register call Mary -Walker Thiel at 236-
4557.
On Sun., Oct. 28 a poor man's luncheon was held at
the Zurich Mennonite Church following the morning
service. Leeanne Bechard also spoke about her recent
summer missionary trip to Guatemala.
Heidi Klopp (London) enjoyed spending last week from
Oct. 17 - 24 visiting with her grand -parents Donna and
Herb Klopp on Victoria Island, B.C.
Laverne Corriveau returned home from California
after spending six weeks with her son Peter and family,
sister Anne and some time hi Lake Taho. Also visited
with the Thiel family and Larry and Karen Smith.
Visitors with Laurence Corriveau this week were
nephew Greg, his son Brad, granddaughter Erin
Cassone and two little sons Cole and Tyson of Stratford.
Bluewater Heritage Committee
The Bluewater Heritage Committee would like to
round out its membership by inviting interested people
from Hensall, Zurich and surrounding areas to join this
committee. Our mandate is to promote the preservation
and maintenance of architectural and /or historic build-
ings, cultural landscapes and natural heritage features.
This group is subcommittee to the Bluewater council.
We have monthly evening meetings and would welcome
anyone with similar interests. Please contact chairman

On Sun., Oct. 21 Town and Country Bowling Lanes
hosted the Master/Junior Tournament. There were
nine (three person) teams participating. The winning
team was Adam Beavers, Jerad Fraser and Derek King
from St. Marys.
Individual awards won by Zurich junior bowlers were:
Sam Groot - Boys High Single, pins over average;
Breanne Bedard - Girls High Single, pins over average
and Justin Anderson - High Triple, scratch.
O.A.A.S. District 8 -Annual Meeting
Six members of the Zurich Agricultural Society attend-
ed the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies
District 8 dinner and annual meeting at the new recre-
ation centre in St. Marys on Tues., Oct. 23. A delicious
roast chicken dinner was served by a St. Marys caterer.
Guests were the Fair Ambassadors of District 8 and the
2007 Miss CNE who represented the Milverton Fair at
the CNE competition in August, 2007. She spoke of her
experience after winning her title, Miss CNE, at the
Exhibition in Toronto.
Gayle King of Bayfield, the District 8 Agriculture direc-
tor and Shirley Atchieson of Stratford, the District 8
Homecraft director, gave reports of their activities in the
District and also spoke about some of their duties in
planning the O.A.A.S. Convention. The ambassador
committee announced that the 2008 District 8
Competition will be held in Listowel on May 3. A District
8 spring workshop will be held on March 29 at Stratford
to review the constitutions and by laws of Agricultural
Societies with a speaker from OMAFRA.

youth poster and youth chocolate chip cookie competi-
tions were announced. Congratulations to Zurich Fair
winners who had entries in the competitions. Colin
McBride of Zurich Public School won third prize for his
plate of chocolate chip cookies and Nicole Dunn also of
Z.P.S. won third prize for her poster in the Grades 5 and
6 class.
Steve Geddes was an inspirational speaker who used a
paddle that he had made using several kinds of wood.
He spoke of many people who have influenced his life.
The business of an annual meeting - minutes of the
2006 Annual Meeting, acceptance of the 2007 financial
statement and budget for 2008, the nomination commit-
tee report and the appointment of financial examiners
for 2008 followed the guest speaker.
The attendance award was won by the Bayfield
Agricultural Society who had the most people in atten-
dance.
Ron McKay of Clinton invited everyone to attend the
2008 Annual Meeting in Clinton.
Bill Westman of Milverton won the 50/50 draw. Gifts
were presented to director Gayle King and secretary -
treasurer Arm Hargrave - executive members who are
retiring.
New executive
The 2008 executive for District 8 will be past agricul-
ture director - Gayle King, Bayfield Fair; agriculture
director - Robert Hargrave, Milverton Fair; associate
agriculture director - Ron McKay, Clinton Fair; past
homecraft director - Robina Alexander, Listowel Fair;
homecraft director - Shirley Atchieson, Stratford Fair;
associate homecraft director - Betty Jermyn Seaforth
Fair; and secretary - treasurer - Janet Cameron, Clinton
Fair.
Huron County fairs set up displays using their 2007
theme. Next year the Perth County fair will each set up
a display. Each society was reminded to keep track of
the number of volunteer hours that directors and volun-
teers spend to plan, set up exhibits and displays at the
time of the fair and also the cleanup after the fair and
any other duties during the year.
The 2007 dinner and annual meeting were well
attended by peoples of District 8 which shows that there
is still enthusiasm and an interest for holding an annual
agriculture fair.
