The Ausable Bayfield Maitland Valley Source Protection Committee (SPC) is the first of 19 committees being formed in the province to pre- pare plans to protect municipal drinking water sources. The local SPC held a full-day meet- ing to obtain background on the Drinking Water Source Protection planning initiative and to begin con- sidering rules of procedure to gov- ern the committee's planning work over the next three to five years. Representatives of industry, agri- culture, commerce, municipalities, environmental organizations and the public -at -large were in atten- dance to begin their work towards a science -based plan to protect drink- ing water sources. Non-voting liaison members repre- senting health, First Nations and Source Protection Authorities were also in attendance and contributed to discussion. "Committee members asked excel- lent questions and showed a keen interest in creating the foundation for effective work in the future to protect municipal drinking water sources," says SPC chairperson Larry Brown. Thirteen of the 15 members of the committee were present at the first meeting. Only two members were absent due to previous out -of -area commitments. " "It was great to see such an excel- lent turn -out for the first meeting," says Brown, adding, "The group worked very positively and effective- ly together with some great dialogue and input." The committee expects to hold future meetings in Clinton, which is in a central location to the Source Protection Region (SPR). The committee next meets Nov. 28. All meetings are public. There are 15 voting members on the committee, representing one third municipal representation, one third economic -sector representa- tion (agriculture, industry, com- merce) and one-third other sectors (including public -at -large, property owner and environmental represen- tation). "This committee will have an important role over the coming four years in developing science -based plans that will help to protect our most valuable resource, which is clean drinking water," Brown says. The members of the committee are: Marilyn Miltenburg (North), Ian Brebner (South), Meredith Schneider (East), Don Jones (West) and Jim Nelemans (Central). The economic members are: Keith Black (Agriculture), Mike Strang (Agriculture), Rowena Wallace (Agriculture), Gib Dow (Commerce), Al Hamilton (Industry). Other voting members are Matt Pearson (Environment), Bill Rowat (Environment), Mike McElhone (Property Owners), Gerry Rupke (Public -at -Large) and Karen Galbraith (Public -at -Large). The committee will also include non-vot- ing liaison members: Jim Ginn (Source Protection Authority), Bob Bresette (Kettle and Stony Point First Nation), Joseph Gilbert (Walpole Island First Nation), Bob Worsell (Health) and a representa- tive from the Ontario Ministry of Environment (MOE), to be con- firmed.
