Wait for the facts
Regarding the future of the MacNaughton
Dam, let's not jump to any conclusions
before we learn all the facts.
As reported last week, the municipality has
received complaints about the green muck at
the pond and around the dam. Council respond-
ed by agreeing to hold a public meeting on the
issue and seeking a 50 per cent grant to cover a
proposed future study estimated to cost
$30,000. The municipality will only go ahead
with the study if it is successful receiving the
grant.
It's obvious this is an issue South Huron resi-
dents care about. The look of Exeter's parks is a
point of pride and there's a fear that visitors to
our town, seeing the unsightly green vegetation
at the dam, which is actually duckweed, will get
the wrong impression of our town.
Duckweed is not algae (it in fact limits the
growth of algae in water) and improves water
quality by removing phosphorus and nitrogen.
But it can look ugly and some residents want
the municipality to get rid of it. But do they
want to pay for it? Do they want the municipali-
ty spraying chemicals on the pond to get rid of
the duckweed? Aren't there already enough
chemicals in our environment?
Will removing the dam help get rid of the
duckweed? Is it worth the expense? If the study
goes ahead, the possible solutions to getting rid
of the duckweed will likely be costlier than
some residents will want to pay.
Should we just learn to live with the duck-
weed, as ugly as it may be? Should we hope
that our terribly dry summer this year remains
an anomaly and rainfalls in the future will
return to normal levels, reducing the amount of
duckweed in the pond?
Right now there are a lot of questions about
the future of the dam and not many answers.
Let council know where you stand on this
issue. Council has agreed to hold a public meet-
ing on the issue before making any decisions on
the future of the dam.

SHOULDER! I DARE YA!
OUBLVG PARE ¥A!
I've retired my rockstar lifestyle
Yes, gone is the music, the crazy hair and cloth-
ing. Gone are the tattoos and the silver micro-
phone.
I've retired my rockstar lifestyle,
most, it only took one night.
For years I'd wanted to be this rockin' n'
rollin' rockstar.
I've always loved my music, singing in
the shower and the car.
So this year for Halloween I went all out.
I didn't spend much. Most of my costume
was already at home in my closet.
I'm pretty cheap and the costumes these
days are either extremely expensive, too
sexy or way too cold — plus outside of
work, my style sort of leans towards the
"rockstar" look (in a good way).
So, while getting my costume, I bought
just a few accessories — a big sparkly silver
microphone, studded neck and wrist bands and
the best part of all, my tattoo sleeve.
Wow, was that ever cool. And that's the fun of
Halloween, "pretending" to be someone you're
not.
I mean, I don't even have a tattoo. And here I
was, looking ultra tough.
This tattoo sleeve was crazy, seriously, so much
fun.
And then came the big closet search.
After finding the perfect leather vest, leather
and unlike
jacket, silver hoops, black make-up, flared jeans
with a studded belt and my AC/DC and Rolling
Stones pins for my clothing, I was ready.
And since I cheaped out on the costume, I treat-
ed myself to getting my hair done — on
the "Wild Side."
It was teased, crimped, braided, hair -
sprayed and pinned (59 pins in total were
used).
And then I was ready. I was taken to
Sarnia, to the military base, as I have
friends who are part of the military.
First of all, I was dressed crazy from
head to toe. Second of all, it's not often
that I actually go to a military base for a
party and dressed like a rockstar.
While stepping "out of the box" for the
night, my date for the evening made me
feel at ease.
He'd dressed as my roadie, carrying my micro-
phone around for me.
And did he ever look the part, equipped in a
bright blonde mullet wig.
So my night was definitely different, a good
kind of different.
I lived out my dream job, minus the singing (I
can't sing to save my life) and I went somewhere
totally different, having an awesome time.
And I've now retired my rockstar lifestyle, full -
filled — at least for another year.
