The Times Advocate, 2007-10-31, Page 3Wednesday, October 31, 2007 Times—Advocate 3 Important fundraiser for Big Brothers By Scott Nixon TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF EXETER — Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Huron (BBBSSH) is gearing up for its major fall fundraiser and, as board secretary Laurie Mackechnie recently told the Times -Advocate, it's important for the organiza- tion that its "Whodunnit???" mystery dinner be a success. "Whodunnit???" will be held Nov. 16 at South Huron Rec Centre. In addi- tion to including a three -course dinner from Catering By Barbara, the evening includes an interactive mystery and entertainment. Mackechnie said BBBSSH, which started in 1977, works on a tight budget and relies heavily on a cou- ple of fundraisers per year. The upcoming mystery dinner in Exeter is the organization's largest fall fundraiser, with the next major fundraiser the Bowl for Kids events in the winter. BBBSSH receives no government fund- ing and relies on the community, organi- zations, businesses and the United Way for funding. Mackechnie said the organi- zation needs to sell a mini- mum of 100 tickets to its "Whodunnit???" fundraiser to be successful. Mackechnie has been on the BBBSSH board for nearly two years and is a former Big Sister. She said fundraising has become more difficult over the last couple of years because there are more orga- nizations holding fundraisers and only so many dollars available in the community. BBBSSH receives no government funding and relies on the community, organizations, businesses and the United Way for funding. Hensall well shutdown VARNA — Wells in Hensall will soon start to be shut down after a tender was accepted by council Oct. 22. Utilities manager Bill Stauttner told council that there are four production wells and 25 monitor- ing wells in the vicinity of Hensall that are to be shut down as part of the Exeter-Hensall pipeline con- struction. Stauttner said while the work was ordered to be completed by Dec. 31, three production wells and one observation well will be kept in service until after the pipeline water is provided and proved to be secure. The lowest tender received for the project was $51,592.32 from Well Initiatives Inc, which was accepted by council.
