Despite the loss, Exeter Hawk coach Deryk Howard said the team is making progress. "The way we played the game, this team realizes we're about ready to start winning some games." Howard noted the Hawks lost their first game to the Stars by a 7-1 score. "To bring them into our arena and keep a nice tight game, we've obviously made some strides." He added one of the strong points for the Hawks, especially against the Stars, has been goaltending. The Stars had taken a 1-0 lead in the first period as they outshot the Hawks 21-12 but Steve Osgood stopped 20 shots to keep the Hawks in the game. The Hawks responded in the second period with goals from Jake Schmidt and Justin Reid to take a 2-1 lead. "The 3-0 third period really isn't indicative of the way we played." The Hawks have two games this week start- ing tonight when they visit Lucan at 7:45 p.m. and Friday night when they host West Lorne at 8:30 p.m. "We improved the second time around against Parkhill and we're going to look to improve the second time around against these teams," said Howard. Panthers are Huron -Perth field hockey champs GODERICH — On Friday in Goderich, the South Huron District High School field hockey team won the Huron -Pert h Championship. In the semifinal, the girls were ranked number two and played St. Annes, ranked number three. The league score between the two teams resulted in a 0-0 tie, although the Panthers dominated. The semifinal started off with St. Annes getting a breakaway after only two minutes, with a good goal being scored. It only took two more minutes for the Panthers to tie the game with Lindsay Mills scoring an opportunist goal. After five more minutes of pressure, Staci Miller scored after some strong running by Mills and Kristen Ferguson. The score at the half was 2-1. Immediately at the start of the second half, Mills again scored as she ran to the net to jamb the ball through the goalie's pads before being upended. Four minutes later, Ferguson scored a solo effort. The game was now being blown wide open by the skill and intensity of the South Huron girls. Sandra Gregus added to the total, running the ball from 30 yards out, pro- gressing the ball along the end line, passing to Miller, receiving the return and slotting the ball into the net. Rookie Emily Lacasse entered the game and was rewarded for her hard work by a goal at the 20 minute mark. Receiving the ball from fellow rookie Melissa Cronyn, she neatly tipped it past the St. Annes net minder. Two minutes later, Lacasse jumped on a ball after a great effort by Karly Bryson and tipped the ball into the net to end the scoring at 7-1. The midfield line of Gregus, Ferguson, Abbey Oke and Kerri Reschke, dominated the play during the game. In the second semifinal, Goderich defeated Listowel by a score of 1-0. In the final, the Panthers defeated Goderich by a 1-0 score. This was a truly exciting game, where both teams had their fans (and their coaches) on the edge of their seats. It was end-to-end with the forwards testing the defence and goalies. The score at the end of the first half was 0-0, but 12 minutes into the second half, rookie Lacasse notched the winner having stepped onto the field about one minute earlier. The goal came from a great passing play which started with Gregus having one of her scintillating runs down the wing, passed to Ferguson who found Miller on the end line. She slotted the ball across the net and before the goalie could react, Lacasse had the ball in the net. The game continued at a frenetic pace with both teams giving their all. The defensive line of Bryson, Janita Pfaff, Lauren Haberer and Carly Schroder, together with goalie Michelle Boere, worked their hearts out and were outstanding in defending the lead. As the final whistle was blown there was confusion in the Exeter crease as Goderich thought they had scored, South Huron was protesting and the umpire said there was no goal as the game was over. Both teams advance to WOSSAA Thursday and Friday in Goderich. South Huron plays at 10 a.m. against the number two team from Thames Valley. The Panthers play their second game at 2:30 p.m. against Sarnia Collegiate. To advance to the semifi- nals, the Panthers must win one of these games. Winning the semifinal would advance South Huron to OFSAA at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga the following week. EXETER — The Exeter — Exeter Mohawks improved their record to 3-1-0 Friday night with a 4-2 win in Clinton. The win leaves the Mohawks just two points back of the league and conference leading Lucan-Ilderton Jets. Against Clinton, Jeff Maclean put the Mohawks ahead with the only goal of the first peri- od. The Radars fired a pair of power play goals in the second wrapped wrapped around an Exeter goal from Shawn Clinton for a 2-2 tie going into the final period. And a goal by Mohawk Jarrett Jeffrey proved to be the winner and Jeremy Van Bergen sealed the victory with an empty net marker with 30 seconds left. The Mohawks have one game this week when they host Clinton Saturday at 8:30 p.m. The Mohawk Minute By Todd McCann I?XI I'IT MOHAWKS SR. "A" HOCKEY CLUB Here we are for the second "Mohawk Minute." It's unbeliev- able once you get started how quickly the weeks go by. After, sitting down this week and researching for future articles I real- ized that I really wanted to focus on our upcom- ing game Oct. 27 against Clinton. The Mohawks are happy to support a great cause and are "thinking pink," as we hold a fundraiser in support of breast cancer aware- ness. When I was approached with the idea I knew this was def- initely something our team could get behind and do "our" part. Cancer has touched the lives of so many and breast cancer has touched me on a person- al level and even after this event, if we've increased the awareness to even one more per- son, it has been a suc- cess. We have some things planned for this game to help do our part, includ- ing raffles and draws. The Mohawks will be donating half of our gate, 50/50 and bar sales to support this cause. A Breast cancer fact sheet: • Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian women; • One in nine Canadian women is expected to develop breast cancer during her lifetime. One in 27 will die from the disease; • In 2006, an estimated 22,200 women were diagnosed with breast cancer and 5,300 died from it. • On average, 429 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer every week; • On average, 102 Canadian women will die of breast cancer every week; • Breast cancer death rates have declined steadily since 1986. In fact, the most recent data shows the breast cancer death rate to be at its lowest since 1950; • When breast cancer is detected and treated early, the chances for recovery are better; • Mammography and clinical breast examina- tions are the most reli- able methods of finding breast cancer. As I said this is such an important cause that it deserves as much atten- tion as possible and next week I'll get into a bit more about our team. So come out and sup- port the Mohawks and the fight against breast cancer. Thank you for all of your continued support and we hope to see you there Oct. 27 at 8:30 p.m. at the South Huron Rec Centre.
