Meeting focuses on economic development

EXETER — The South Huron Community
Development and Promotion Committee is preparing a
meeting next week for members of the Exeter Business
Association, business owners and their employees to
"create excitement on Main Street."
Committee member and South Huron Coun. Cathy
Seip said the free evening, "Empowering Your
Business," which takes place 6-9 p.m. Oct. 30 at South
Huron Rec Centre, is designed to help local businesses
promote economic development and growth in Exeter.
"If you have a strong Exeter, you have a strong South
Huron," Seip said, explaining she hopes to see non -retail
businesspeople attend the meeting as well.
The evening will include four speakers: former South
Huron chief administrative officer Larry Brown, who
will talk about visions of the economic future for Exeter
and South Huron; business owner and consultant Rob
Evans who will talk about business improvement associ-
ations; Huron County senior economic development offi-
cer Mike Pullen, talking about tapping into resources for
potential partnership and re -branding strategies; and
Goderich B.I.A. manager Jan Hawley, who will speak
about local B.I.A. success stories.
Christmas auction Sat., Nov 3

ZURICH - The Bean Sprouts
Nursery School is having a fundrais-
er scrapbooking day at the Zurich
Mennonite Church on Sat., Nov. 3
from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Cost for the
day is $30 which includes lunch and
door prizes.
All proceeds will go to the nursery
school.

The Stratford and District Right to
Life Dinner will be held at the Arden
Park Hotel on Thurs., Nov. 1 at 7
p.m. Tickets are $25 person. Call
Bella Soudant 236-4178 as soon as
possible.
Buy an apple on Saturday
On Saturday morning Oct. 27 the
Scouts will be going around town for
Apple Day from 10 o'clock to noon.
Be sure and watch for the kids!
The E.L.W. Fall London
Conference was held at St. Peter's
Lutheran Church in Brodhagen on
Oct. 13 with some members going
from Zurich. It was very informa-
tive.
"The Parson's Predicament" was a
great musical Comedy play that was
held at Huron Country Playhouse II
from last Friday to Sunday with a
full house at all three shows. All the
cast members did a terrific job!
The children of Jason and Kelli
Regier (Samantha and Jacob) were
baptized at St. Peter's church (St.
Joseph) on Oct. 13 by Fr. Keller.
On Fri., Oct. 26 the youth group
from St. Boniface School will be
going "glow in the dark" bowling in
Zurich from 7 - 8 p.m. Cost is $4.
Zurich `Friends of the Library' are
having a special meeting on Tues.,
Oct. 23 from 8 - 9 p.m. at the
library.
Games night will be held at the
Lutheran Church hall on Sat., Nov. 3
(an opportunity for families to have
fun together).
`Bring a friend to skating day' is
this coming Saturday morning (Oct.
27) at the Zurich complex. 3-D
Fashions will also be there from
Dorchester selling skating clothes
and items with some proceeds going
to the club. Everyone is welcome.
C.W.L. Harvest Bazaar
All are invited to attend the annual
St. Boniface C.W.L. Parish Harvest
Bazaar being held in their church
hall on Sat., Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. to
2 p.m. Food, fun, draws, bake and
penny sale table.
The Youth Bowling League at the
Town and Country Lanes in Zurich
are selling tickets on a lovely
Christmas quilt that is now on dis-
play there. The draw will be on Dec.
5 with all proceeds going to the
Y.B.C. group.
A good time was had by all of us
(13 in all) who travelled on the rest
home bus (driven by Patti Groot) last
Thursday evening to the Clinton
high school to see the Legends of
Rock and Roll Tribute Show (which
was really good) in support of the
Alzheimer's Society.
Ten residents along with Stacey,
Patti and Carmel enjoyed the singing
and dancing. Verona Asmus from
our group was also lucky enough to
win the 50/50 draw worth $162.
Gertie Stade got the scarf from Elvis
and Doug Peacock was personally
sang to.
John Gascho from the Maple
Woods Apt. recently spent three
weeks visiting with his daughter
Rose -Mary and Everat Fathering
Hand and family in North Bay.
Congratulations to Glenn and
Donna Thiel who celebrated their
45th Anniversary on Oct. 6. Best
wishes for a speedy recovery goes
out to Josie Denomme and Pat
Bedard.
The Hensall United Church is hav-
ing a Christmas Fantasy Auction at
their community centre on Sat., Nov.
3 which begins at 7:30 p.m.
Admission at the door is $5 with lots
to see and do. For dinner tickets call
Lynn at 262-2938.
Halloween
The kids will be coming around for
their Halloween treats on Wed., Oct.
31 so be sure and have your porch
light on for them and pumpkins lit
up. Also be sure and take your kids
to the rest home that night from
between 5:30 - 8 p.m. as the resi-
dents will be out in the lobby to view
the costumes and hand out candy.
If you are out walldng, remember
to wear reflective clothing; have fun
and be safe.
A Halloween welcome for families
and kids on Oct. 31 will be held at
the new Stone Meadows subdivision.
Just follow the pumpkin lane (lamp
post) to the club house for treats
from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The next day after Halloween is a
P.A. day at school. No classes for
kids on Thurs., Nov. 1.
Remember time change
This year the clocks will be
changed on Sat., Nov. 3 before going
to bed. Remember to set your
clocks back one hour.
A Halloween party for grade
school aged children on Fri., Oct. 26
from 6:30 p.m.to 8 p.m. will be held
at the Arc Industries in Dashwood.

A retirement open house for John
Consitt is being planned for Fri.,
Nov. 2 at the Zurich complex from
1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Everyone is wel-
come to attend.
Voluntary mission in
Guatemala
Nov. 3 will be the second annual
surgical mission for Tracy Rau in
Guatemala. This voluntary mission
encompasses a hand picked surgical
staff willing to donate their time and
expertise to providing the less fortu-
nate men, women and children with
replacement joints (hips and knees).
Last year, over 70 patients
received new or updated joints with-
in the seven day mission. Canadian
and U.S. sponsors look after the
travel and material expenses for the
team's mission. Tracy has been part
of orthopedic surgical staff at
London Health Sciences (University
Campus) for over 10 years and your
family is very proud of your accom-
plishments and your willingness to
help others. Best wishes for a safe
and successful mission
this year.

The meeting will include a light supper, cash bar and
a question and answer period.
Seip said the community needs to pull together to
improve economic development. If there is enough
interest in next week's presentation she would like to
hold more in the future for the general public.
Seip described the evening's speakers as "very pas-
sionate" about the subjects they are speaking on.
