Wednesday, October 24, 2007 Times–Advocate 9 New Block Parent signs coming EXETER — Two hundred win- dows around South Huron will be sporting new improved Block Parent signs over the next few weeks thanks to a collaboration project between the National Block Parent Program and the Ontario Provincial Police. A number of changes have been made to the red and white window sign which is the distinctive symbol of the safety campaign for children in our community. The new sign will include a num- ber of security features and an improved screening process for prospective Block Parent volun- teers. The main duty of Block Parents is to be alert and available so that any child can have adult assistance if the need should arise for protection from such things as illness, bully- ing, accidents, bad weather, strange animals and being bothered by strangers. Every year South Huron's Block Parents report a number of inci- dents involving not only young chil- dren, but also seniors who have needed help. Chairperson Nancy Jane Finch says, "Block Parent Week is Oct 21- 27. Our committee members will be in area schools at this time to teach the Junior Kindergarten to Grade 3 students to recognize the Block Parent sign, and to understand when to seek a Block Parent home. "We are asking all of our Block Parents to commit to the new sign/screening process, and will provide any assistance they may need in completing the necessary forms/ID. "At the end of the day, safety and security are the defming goal of our program, and these new measures will ensure that a Block Parent home is a safe one." For further information about the new signs/screening process call Finch at 235-2099.
