As previously reported, Consolidated Sign and Lighting Services had quoted the new sign at $32,684.95, plus GST. The sign's purpose was to provide day-to-day municipal details to residents and also to provide infor- mation to the public during emergencies. A decision on the issue from an earlier meeting was deferred to council's Oct. 15 meeting, when it was unan- imously turned down by councillors. Coun. George Robertson said he received a number of negative calls from residents about the proposed sign. He said South Huron residents told him the municipality can find a better use for the money than to buy a pro- grammable sign. Robertson said he agreed, adding he doesn't know how useful the sign would be to South Huron residents. He explained that day-to-day informa- tion on municipal matters can be found on the municipality's website, in the Times -Advocate or by calling town hall. Coun. Tom Tomes said he was also against buying the sign, citing the cost. Also, he said the munici- pality should have sought tenders for the sign and, now that the price has been made public, it can't be tendered. Coun. Cathy Seip said she likes the idea of the sign, but doesn't think the look of it blends in with the rest of town hall, an opinion Coun. David Frayne agreed with, saying any sign should fit in with the "heritage" theme of the town hall surround- ings. Coun. Jim Dietrich also received negative phone calls about the sign and said, "It's money wasted." Mayor Ken Oke, who also received phone calls from residents opposed to the sign, said he thinks the sign proposal became bigger and cost- lier than its original intent. All councillors voted against buy- ing the sign, although Seip said she would like to see the idea looked at again in the future. Other council notes: Emergency generator Council approved the purchase of a 20kw natural gas powered emer- gency generator for the water/sewer operations building in Exeter. The generator will provide backup power during electrical blackouts for equipment in the operations building and in the water tower. The low bidder for the generator was Harper Power Products Inc., at $14,900 plus taxes. The price does- n't include installation. Council approved the purchase of the generator at a cost of up to $30,000, including installation, in its 2007 budget. Monthly building report Development in the municipality is up this year, with building and development manager Dwayne McNab presenting his September building report to council. September saw 17 building permits issued at a value of $1,749,095, with permit fees of $19,329.90. So far in 2007, 140 building permits have been issued, with a value of $14,798,657.11, and permit fees of $151,460.37. New apartment building Council has adopted a develop- ment agreement that will see a stor- age/restaurant/mercantile building at 63 Main St. converted to include 11 apartments. McNab said the property owners have been working with the munici- pality to work on stormwater man- agement and access, curbing and parking upgrades for the site. Thirty-two parking spaces are pro- posed at the back of the property, while seven will remain at the front. Paving of the site has also been proposed, McNab's report to council states. Owners have also proposed fencing to conceal head- lights from neighbouring properties. The building will also be made wheelchair accessible. "This proposal is well co-ordinated and will utilize Exeter's existing infrastructure by converting this build- ing into a safe and accessible complex," McNab's report said. The majority of the apartments will be one -bedroom units, while two will be two-bedroom apartments. T. J.'s Family Billiards will move to the building's main level, while Belongers will remain in its current location. RCMP Musical Ride Councillors discussed attending an Oct. 16 meeting at South Huron Rec Centre to discuss preliminary plans for bringing the RCMP Musical RIDE to Exeter. While nothing has been finalized, tentative plans have the event coming to Exeter in September 2008. A steer- ing committee has been set up to help plan the event and an RCMP co-ordinator will visit Exeter in November to further discuss plans. No white squirrel? Seip expressed disappointment that the white squirrel was not featured in a promotional video the municipali- ty commissioned from ETM. Seip said the white squirrel is a tourist attraction and should have been part of the video. As previously reported, the municipality paid ETM $10,000 to make a video about the municipality that can be used for promotional purposes.
