Officers conducted numerous RIDE pro- grams throughout the county. In West Region there were 44 drinking and driving charges — one of which came from Huron County. Of the thirty-two 12 -hour suspensions handed out in West Region, three came from Huron County. There were nearly 1,000 speeding charges laid in the region, 130 occupant restraint charges and 27 careless driving charges. One of the careless driving charges also came from Huron County. Overall the county did fairly well. One death did occur Oct. 8, wherein a lack of seatbelt use was determined to be a factor. Centralia celebrates 85 year anniversary By Mary Peterson CENTRALIA CORRESPONDENT CENTRALIA - Hello everyone! Have you found some warmer clothes in your closet? Real fall weather fell upon us last week, and now the leaves are quickly turning to autumn shades. The decorating team of Dave Elliot, Faye and Larry Skinner, Carol Somerville, and Judy Mills did a great job of bringing the fall colours indoors to decorate the sanctuary at Centralia United Church at Thanksgiving, and again for the church's anniversary on Sun., Oct. 14. In addition to the lovely fall leaves, there were pumpkins, fruits and vegetables and flowers in every window and throughout the church. Larry Skinner greeted everyone at the door and handed them a special program designed by Nina Knee to honour the occasion. Dave Williams welcomed everyone from Centralia and Zion West and invited them to fmd peace during worship. Mikenzie Skinner lit the Christ candle. Everyone joined in the responsive reading and the prayer of thanks. Marjorie Johns provided musical accompaniment for several hymns during worship, including Come in, Come in and Sit Down, Jesus' Hands Were Kind Hands, We Have This Ministry, Your Work, 0 God, Needs Many Hands, and God of Grace and God of Glory. Dave Williams invited the children to meet with him at the front, and they discussed the importance of giv- ing thanks. He reminded them of the story of the 10 lepers when only one returned to thank Jesus for being healed. The Scriptures included readings from Psalm 66:1-12 and Isaiah 58: 6-11. Dave Williams' message to the congregation focused on part of the Scripture reading, "...like a watered gar- den". He explained that his own garden had received little water this past summer, and as a result, had pro- duced fewer and smaller vegetables. IIe compared the church to a garden, and explained how everyone required nourishing at various times, and sometimes extra support through tough times. He asked that everyone remember in their prayers several members of the congregation and their families who need support as they deal with various health issues. Dave spoke about the history of Centralia United Church, which began with ministry from a minister who rode to the village by horseback for worship. The church originally was situated further south, but the first church building was built at the current site in 1886. It was hit by lightning and destroyed by fire in 1921, and was replaced by the current red brick church in 1922. He congratulated the church on cele- brating its 85th Anniversary. Everyone enjoyed the musical talents of Rob Essery on saxophone and Marjorie Johns on the piano for the lively number Shout Out Your Love for Jesus. Worship closed with the choral response Go Now in Peace. Community Activities The community extends prayers and sympathy to the families of Mike Parsons and Bev Delbridge who recently passed away. Rev. Ray Hagerman will arrange to visit those who are sick or who would appreciate spiritual support. Contact Ray Mills or Ivan Hem if you wish to ask Rev. Ray to visit someone. There will be a special meeting of the official board on Thurs., Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Centralia United Church to deal with one item related to pastoral rela- tions. All members of the official board are requested to attend this meeting. On Sun., Oct. 21, regular worship services will be held at Zion West and Centralia United Churches. John McNeilly will be guest speaker and at Zion, Sharon McNeilly will provide musical accompaniment. Exeter United Church invite everyone to a Beef BBQ Dinner and County and Western Entertainment on Oct. 20 at the South Huron Rec Centre. Advance tickets are available from the church or Exeter Decor Centre. Brucefield United Church will host a Beef BBQ on Oct. 21. Reserve advance tickets by contacting Jim Collins at 233-7188. All United Church Women are invited to attend the Fall Rally at St. Mary's United Church on Mon., Oct. 22. Registration will be at 6:30 p.m. Don't forget that the Turkey Supper and Silent Auction will be held at the South Huron Rec Centre on Sun., Nov. 18. Everyone is asked to think about how you can provide assistance during the supper and by donating an item for the auction.
