Exeter coach Deryk Howard said one area the Hawks are trying to improve is their second period play. "It seems to be a weak period for us. We start strong and finish strong. We're trying to put it together in the middle." After a scoreless first period Friday night, Dustin McTaggart opened the scoring for Lucan at 2:00 of the second period, but Josh Wood evened the score just over a minute later. But the Irish broke the game open with three more goals before the period was over, with McTaggart, Ryan Hogervorst and Ryan Clarke giving Lucan a 4-1 lead. Justin Mathonia cut the Lucan lead to 4-2 midway through the third period but it was all Exeter could get as Brendan Wraith put the game away at 18:03. Saturday night against Central Elgin, the Express opened the scoring before goals from Jake Jeffrey and Scott Muirhead in the last two minutes of the period gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead. The Hawks pulled into a 6-6 tie with a goal from Justin Cann at 8:27 and Brendan Babbage scored what proved to be the winning goal at 14:25. Panther junior girls EXETER — The South Huron District High School junior girls basketball team split a pair of games in Listowel last week, losing to Stratford Northwestern 43-19 then rebounding in their second game to defeat Listowel 43-24. Terri Stuckless with 21 points, Taelor Douglas with nine and Gina Phoutharath and Alana Horn with six points each led the Panthers offensively. Coach Russ Watson said Nicole Insley had many key steals while Danielle Daters with several shot blocks and Alyssa Becker with strong rebounding keyed the strong defensive game. Daters and Becker along with Morgan Powe added four points each and Tonya Wilson rounded out the scoring with two points. The Panthers' league record now stands at four and two with four games to play. Irish doubled 4-2 LUCAN — The Lucan Irish were defeated 4-2 at home by the Thamesford Trojans Oct. 10. Lucan is in North Middlesex Saturday at 8:30 p.m. before visiting Lambeth Sunday at 7:45 p.m. Against Thamesford, Lucan took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Justin Lightfoot before the Trojans replied with a goal in each period. After the Trojans took a 3-1 in the first minute of the third period, Kevin Dean replied for the Irish to make it 3-2. But the Trojans sealed the win with an empty net goal with one second left for the 4-2 win.
