Crokinole club starts Tues., Oct. 23 at Varna Church

VARNA CORRESPONDENT
VARNA — The Stan Lee Club held their October
Meeting in the Complex on Oct. 3 with 15 members in
attendance. President Charles Reid presided over the
meeting. Treasurer Bill Taylor reported and Anna
Keys read the minutes. U.S.C.O. dues will rise to $3
next September.
The executive continue to work on behalf of Seniors
lobbying the government and working away to insure
that they all receive what they should.
The Fall Rally was in Exeter on Oct. 10.
The Christmas meeting will be Wed., Dec. 5 at 5 p.m.
The next Stan Lee Meeting will be on Wed., Nov. 7 at
7:30 p.m. Note change of time!
Many ladies and gents from the Varna Goshen
Community plus others from surrounding areas such
as Bayfield, Brucefield, Kippen, Hensall and other
areas crowded through the doors at the Varna
Complex to come honour Elly Van Bergen and Ivan
Dow at a Community Bridal Get Together.
Carol Simons welcomed everyone and Anna Keys
read a reading followed by Jocelyn Van Aaken on the
piano. Alicia Dowson sang for everyone and Alissa
Taylor played a number on the piano. Jacob Govier
also played a piano selection. The Goshen -Varna trio
performed and Linda Keys read a recipe for a perfect
husband.
The Varna Goshen players then prepared a presen-
tation "A Mock Wedding". Terri Louch was acting as
the minister, Willi Laurie was the photographer,
flower girl Bonnie Roy with her wagon load of flowers,
Groom Linda Linfield, Best Man Joan Beierling,
Bridesmaid Debbie Rathwell, Bride Marjorie Hayter,
reader Geraldine Eckel and the Holstein Cow was Joe
Laurie. There was also a choir singing some home-
made songs. This was a very humorous wedding that
kept everyone laughing including the real Bride and
Groom!!
This followed with a very thoughtful address for Elly
and Ivan read by Marg Robinson.
Everyone signed the guest book and a card box was
presented to Elly by Madison Louch and Elly and Ivan

Linda Firman were the
ushers with Ross Kercher
welcoming everyone. Rev
Lewis' message was "Do
not ask what the church
can do for you, ask what
you can do for God". The
guest pianist was Mary -
Lynn Heatherington.
Communion was conduct-
ed by Rev Lewis. The ser-
vice closed with benedic-
tion.
At Carmel Presbyterian
Church Rev Henry
Hubbert was the guest
minister and also con-
ducted communion.
Helping with the service
were Robert Bell, Al
Hoggarth and Harry Moir.
Harry and Al also
received the offering.
Several hymns were sung
and Scriptures read.
There was a special story
for the children. The ser-
mon was "On Fire for
Jesus". Joyce Pepper was
the organist for the min-
istry of song. The service
closed with benediction.

both got up and very graciously thanked everyone and
cake and fellowship was enjoyed by all.
A Baptism was celebrated in Varna Church on Sun.,
Oct. 14. Pastor Elly welcomed all and gave the
announcements. Donations are still welcome for Elly
on the Gulu walk to raise money and awareness for
the plight of war with displaced children and families
in Northern Uganda. Sunday Oct. 21 is pastor Elly's
last Sunday and also Goshen's
Anniversary.
Please bring sandwiches for lunch to
follow the service for a time of fellow-
ship Oct. 21 for supper that night you
could go to Brucefield United Church
beef BBQ by Cardiff Catering at $12 per
adult.Takeouts are available and
advance tickets only. Contact Jim

Goshen Fall Supper is Oct. 24 with two
sittings at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. for $14
each. Advance tickets only.
Birthday wishes were extended to
Gord Hill on Sunday and Don Taylor,
Doris Wilson and Marg Palsa on Oct. 18.
Pastor Elly's Wedding Banns were
read for the third time by Clerk of the
Session, Jim Kirton.
Following the gift of music by the
choir clerk of session, Jim Kirton pre-
sented Xavier Edward John Pilkey, son
of Heather (Beierling) and Jeremy
Pilkey for Baptism. Xavier is the grand-
son of Wayne and Joan Beierling. Other
grandparents there were Janice Miller
of Belleville, great grandma Donna
Smale and great grandpa Herb
Beierling.
Pastor Elly's message was "None
Found to Return" and her children's story was a story
"Watching You".
Crokinole Anyone?! The Crokinole Club starts for
the season once again on Tues., Oct. 23 at the Varna
Church. Anyone interested please call Joan Beierling
at 233-7443. The Club are always looking for new
members and spares.
