`Charleston'
HURON — The Charleston car may be familiar to
many people in the Carlingford area.
Its yellow colour certainly draws people's attention
when they see it pass quietly by. But what really catch-
es one's eye is the Packard grill on a little two-seater
car. To make this story even more bizarre, the car body
looks like a 1932 Ford Roadster. All of this is the brain-
child of Bert Knott who lives near Carlingford.
Bert bought the fibreglass body, fenders and steel
bumpers in 1982 and immediately started to build the
rest of the car. He had no frame to bolt the body to, but
that was no problem. He just went ahead and built a
frame to fit the body. He used the transmission, differen-
it's a different kind of car
tial, axles and suspension systems from a Ford Mustang
2. The six cylinder engine was from a 1966 Ford
Fairlane. This may seem straightforward enough, but
since he made the frame, he also had to make the clutch
and brake pedals, gas pedal and all the necessary link-
ages to connect the various parts. Lots of head scratch-
ing to get it all to function.
The top came from an unknown car, but making
things fit is what Bert is good at. To give himself enough
headroom, he had to add six inches to the bottom of the
top section. To make it look like a Cabriolet body style,
he flattened black iron pipe to make it look like strap
steel, bent it to shape, making a fancy hinge shape. With
Sisters making bracelets for good cause

EXETER — After seeing several
family members battle cancer,
Exeter area resident Martha
Heywood wanted to do something to
support her loved ones.
Now only a year later Heywood
has donated over $10,000 to the
London Health Sciences Centre
(LHSC) cancer patient care, donated
through bracelets Heywood and her
Exeter area sister and breast cancer
survivor Marg Sweitzer have made.
"I just wanted to do something,"
says Heywood, adding she never
thought the bracelets would become
so popular, especially since the
bracelets are only bought by word of
mouth.
Martha and Marg are pleased to
be able to help out, but both agree
it's a scary thing that the bracelets
are so popular because so many
people have been touched by cancer.
The bracelets, "The Colours of
Cancer Bracelet" are sterling silver
Swarovski crystal bracelets which
come in several different colours
representing the various types of
cancers. The bracelets are $30 each.
The sisters predict at this point
they have made about 850 bracelets,
with the help also of other family
members, depending on how large
the order is.
Reaching the $10,000 mark is tak-

ing a little time to sink in, Martha
said, explaining she is still "flabber-
gasted." Marg adds she is "over-
whelmed."
Both were excited to receive a let-
ter from (LHSC)
thanking them for
their support,
explaining it made
them feel "really
good."

a lot of grinding and sanding, the chrome plating looks

The hood and radiator shell are both hand made to
look like a 1932 Packard. Why did he use a Packard
hood and radiator look-alike? To Bert, the answer was
simple ... he likes Packards. The whole package rides
on 14 -inch wheels with drum brakes on all four wheels.
The vehicle was certified and licensed in 1984.
