"Autumn Splendour" in Kirkton
KIRKTON — Cool evenings and crisp clear mornings have sig-
naled the end of summer and the beginning of Ontario's beauti-
ful fall weather.
With this change in season, the Kirkton Horticultural Society
held its fall meeting, "Autumn Splendour," at the
Kirkton/Woodham Community Centre Oct. 2.
President Rosemary Schaefer welcomed everyone and all
joined in the singing of "0 Canada," with piano accompaniment
by Marjorie Johns.
President Schaefer announced the bus trip to take place
Thurs., Dec. 6, to the "Geritol Follies." The bus will leave Kirkton
at 7:45 a.m. and St. Marys at 8 a.m. The first stop will be at the
Tarra Green House in Waterdown and then to Hamilton Place
for the entertainment and a delicious Christmas dinner The cost
of the trip is $78. For more information or to book the trip,
please contact Marilyn Robinson at 519-284-6410.
Director Robert Traut then introduced iris specialist Rick Mann
from the St. Marys area. With a slide presentation and
self-taught education, Mann provided informative instruc-
tion and wonderful photos of 24 varieties of beautiful
bearded iris.
Many guests noted their favourite varieties, hoping to
add these to next year's garden, while others were the
happy recipients of irises that Mann had donated as door
prizes.
A review of the Children's Horticultural Education pro-
gram was given by directors Cathy Barker, Cindy Bilyea
and Owen O'Brien. This year, area children enjoyed
preparing and planting succulents in old footwear and
gourds. Sixteen competed in two classes with prizes
awarded to all competitors.
In the footwear class first and second place winners
were Brianna Thomson and Kaylin McLeod, respectively,
while the gourd class was won by Regan McLeod in first
place with Kaylin McLeod earning the second place prize.
Protect yourself and
those around you.

It was noted that the children eagerly anticipate this program
and that the parents have been pleased with the teaching the
Kirkton Horticultural Society offers each year.
Traut outlined two upcoming Christmas Workshops to be held
at the Kirkton/Woodham Community Centre Nov. 28 and 29 at 7
p.m. These instructional evenings will be taught by Jaela
Jenken, owner/operator of flower shop, "Earth and Elegance," in
Lucan. Wednesday evening participants will design a pedestal
Christmas centrepiece, and Thursday's course participants will
make a Festive Outdoor hanger. The cost of each course is $45,
which includes all supplies.
After a successful auction, conducted by Mann, everyone
enjoyed a delicious lunch and conversation with other guests and
gardeners.
Schaefer closed the meeting with the reminder of the
Christmas Potluck and flower show Tues., Dec. 5.

Plan Number 1-2-58113' CHARMING STRAIGHT ENTRY Larger than it looks, this two-bedroom cottage not only has charm aplenty it also boasts very
feature the contemporary family requires, as well as an unfinished basement that could do duty as a mortgage -helping suite. A coupl of steps lead f om the
sidewalk to a traditional covered porch, large enough for a pair of chairs and some potted plants. The front door, bordered by narrow mullioned windows, also
features a central window. Once inside the foyer, a triangular display area for collectibles welcomes visitors and family members alike. To the right is the coat
closet; to the left is the second bedroom and a three-piece bathroom. Ahead, past stairs to the lower level, are the great room and dining area. Both these rooms
will be warmed by the great room's fireplace during the cooler months, and the dining area's access to a covered deck and the sundeck beyond, perfect for
year-round barbecuing, will make it a room for all seasons. The kitchen is separated from the great room/dining area by an island. A corner pantry will provide
always -welcome storage space, and a U-shaped counter configuration will save steps for the cook. The master bedroom, located at the back of the house for
privacy, includes an ensuite with a double basis, a shower stall and a soaker tub with a tiled surround. A large walk-in closet, with a linen closet located just
outside, should be roomy enough for the most clothes -conscious couple. A door from the laundry room, which includes a closet for family gear, leads to the
double garage. Exterior finishes include horizontal siding, with shakes and decorative wood detailing in the gables. Traditional pilasters with stone bases, partly
mullioned windows, and painted trim complete the time-honoured look. Suitable for a lot that slopes to the back, this home measures 46 feet wide and 50 feet
deep, for a total of 1,506 square feet. Plans for design 1-2-581 are available for $584 (set of 5), $661 (set of 8) and $710 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents
add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Also add $25.00 for Priority charges within B.C. or $45.00 outside of B.C. Please add 6% G.S.T. or 14% H.S.T. (where applicable) to
both the plan price and Priority charges. Our 39th Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 300 plans is available for $13.50 (includes taxes, postage
