With this change in season, the Kirkton Horticultural Society held its fall meeting, "Autumn Splendour," at the Kirkton/Woodham Community Centre Oct. 2. President Rosemary Schaefer welcomed everyone and all joined in the singing of "0 Canada," with piano accompaniment by Marjorie Johns. President Schaefer announced the bus trip to take place Thurs., Dec. 6, to the "Geritol Follies." The bus will leave Kirkton at 7:45 a.m. and St. Marys at 8 a.m. The first stop will be at the Tarra Green House in Waterdown and then to Hamilton Place for the entertainment and a delicious Christmas dinner The cost of the trip is $78. For more information or to book the trip, please contact Marilyn Robinson at 519-284-6410. Director Robert Traut then introduced iris specialist Rick Mann from the St. Marys area. With a slide presentation and self-taught education, Mann provided informative instruc- tion and wonderful photos of 24 varieties of beautiful bearded iris. Many guests noted their favourite varieties, hoping to add these to next year's garden, while others were the happy recipients of irises that Mann had donated as door prizes. A review of the Children's Horticultural Education pro- gram was given by directors Cathy Barker, Cindy Bilyea and Owen O'Brien. This year, area children enjoyed preparing and planting succulents in old footwear and gourds. Sixteen competed in two classes with prizes awarded to all competitors. In the footwear class first and second place winners were Brianna Thomson and Kaylin McLeod, respectively, while the gourd class was won by Regan McLeod in first place with Kaylin McLeod earning the second place prize. Traut outlined two upcoming Christmas Workshops to be held at the Kirkton/Woodham Community Centre Nov. 28 and 29 at 7 p.m. These instructional evenings will be taught by Jaela Jenken, owner/operator of flower shop, "Earth and Elegance," in Lucan. Wednesday evening participants will design a pedestal Christmas centrepiece, and Thursday's course participants will make a Festive Outdoor hanger. The cost of each course is $45, which includes all supplies. After a successful auction, conducted by Mann, everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch and conversation with other guests and gardeners.
