Seniors' Perspective
By Jim Bearss
SENIORSCORRESPONDENT
People who know where they're going don't need to hurry.
Mabel Stanlake presented me with a Farmer's Collection of
Prose and Poetry by Harry A. Schroeder. Some of the
poems, you will find in the column should really create
great interest: Fibber McGee
Our trip to Florida is up on the walls,
In the bedroom the bathroom and down the halls
When she said "let's do it", she left little doubt
Spring cleaning was in, our vacation was out.
"Your museum of treasures it's time to explore
Clean out your closet from the shelves to the floor
We'll repaint your bedroom, make it look like new
If I thought it would help I'd spring clean you
too"?
Clothes, boxes, papers, sling shots and toys
Pleasant reminders of when we were boys
An "Ink Spot", year books from South Huron High
Some students departed since we said good-bye.
Girls really! I couldn't afford to be
The young Casanova you seen in me
No wages, no car, with little to say
No place to live if we happened to play.
Grandpa! Is that really a picture of you?
With hair, tall and slender like a little Boy Blue".
Son we worked hard, we played hard, now what you see
Is your Grandma's good cooking, less work and T V
These romantic verses I best throw away
Time's proven to me "every Dog has its day".
Promises then my body could keep
Now they're dreams as I fall off to sleep.
My parents, what would they think of me
If they knew just what I turned out to be,
A farmer, living on the old Homestead
Who uses the back instead of my head?
If I could repaint my life over new
What things would I change? What things would I do?
I'd help Mother more, she was the best
With nine boys and one girl she had little rest.
By the grace of God I'll reach the pension age
At last, I'll receive a regular wage
When I wish to relax and farm work is done
Then I'll clean out my closet just for fun.
Harry A Scroeder - Written April 4, 1996

Dinner for Eight
A group of country friends wanted to get together on
a regular basis...socialize and play games. The lady of
the house was to prepare the meal. When it came time
for Al and Janet to be the hosts - Janet wanted to outdo
all the others. Janet decided to have mushroom -smoth-
ered steak. But, mushrooms are expensive. She then
told her husband, "No mushrooms. They are too high."
He said, "Why don't you go down in the pasture and
pick some of those mushrooms? There are plenty in
the creek bed." She said, "No, some wild mushrooms
are poison." He said, "Well, if you see varmints eating
them they're OK. So - Janet decided to give it a try. She
picked a bunch, washed, sliced, and diced them for her
smothered steak.
Then she went out on the back porch and gave 01'
Spot's (the yard dog) a double handful. 01' Spot ate
every bite.
All morning long, Janet watched 01' Spot and the
wild mushrooms didn't seem to affect him, so she
decided to use them. The meal was a great success,
and Janet even hired a helper lady from town to help
her serve. She had on a white apron and a fancy little
cap on her head. After everyone had finished, they
relaxed, socialized, and played 42 and Mexican domi-
noes.
About then, the helper lady from town, came in and
whispered in Janet's ear. She said, "Mrs. Williams, 01'
Spot just died." Janet went into hysterics. After she
finally calmed down, she called the doctor and told him
what had happened. The doctor said, "That's bad, but I
think we can take care of it. I will call for an ambu-
lance and I will be there as quick as possible. We'll
give everyone enemas and we will pump out everyone's
stomach. Everything will be fine. Just keep them
calm."
Soon they could hear the siren as the ambulance was
coming down the road. The EMIt's & the doctor had
their suitcases, syringes, and a stomach pump. One by
one, they took each person into the bathroom, gave
them an enema, and pumped out their stomach. After
the last one was finished, the doctor came out and said,
"I think everything will be fine now, and he left."
They were all looking pretty weak sitting around the
living room, and about this time, the helper lady came
in and said, "You know, that fellow that ran over 01'
Spot never even stopped!!!" Contributed by Bill Tinney
Good Therapy?
A husband and wife came for counseling after 25
years of marriage. When asked what the problem was,
the wife went into a passionate, painful tirade listing
every problem they had ever had in the 25 years they
had been married. She went on and on: neglect, lack of
intimacy, emptiness, loneliness, feeling unloved and
unlovable, an entire list of un -met needs she had
endured over the course of their marriage.
Finally, after allowing this to go on for a sufficient
length of time, the therapist got up, walked around the
desk and, after asking the wife to stand, embraced and
kissed her passionately. The woman shut up and quiet-
ly sat down as though in a daze.
The therapist turned to the husband and said, "This
is what your wife needs at least three times a week.
Can you do this?"
The husband thought for a moment and replied...
"Well, I can drop her off here on Mondays and
Wednesdays, but on Fridays, I fish." Esther Mawson
