The Jets were up 1-0 after one period with a goal from Alex Butkus and extended their lead to 2-0 with a goal from Scott Campbell. The Jets added two more in the third period with goals from Todd Hunt and Brad Yeo and Mathews scored the Mohawks lone goal of the night for the 4-1 Jets win. The Jets are in Thedford Friday at 8:30 p.m. and have their home opener Saturday at 8:30 p.m. versus Lucknow. The Mohawks visit Monkton Friday at 8:30 p.m. before hosting Goderich Saturday, also at 8:30 p.m. Hawks lose two EXETER — The Exeter Hawks came up short in a pair of games on the weekend, with a 7-4 loss in Mt. Brydges Saturday night and an 8-5 loss in Lambeth Sunday night. The losses drop the Hawks' record to 1-5-0 with Exeter hosting Lucan Friday at 8:30 before Exeter visits Central Elgin Saturday at 8:15 p.m. In Mt. Brydges Saturday night, the Bulldogs roared to a 7-0 lead, including three goals in the first period. But the Hawks made a game of it with two goals in the second from Jake Jeffrey and Drew Bayliff and two more in the third from Jacob Schmidt and Bayliff. But it was all the Hawks could get as they were out shot 52-32 and went three for 12 with the man -advantage while giving up three power play goals on 10 Bulldogs chances. In Lambeth Sunday night, the Lancers opened the scoring at 3:17 of the first period before Bayliff tied it at 10:59 and Jeff Mathonia put the Hawks ahead at 15:12. The Lancers tied it before the period was over and again took the lead midway through the second period. Nathan Hibbert cut the Lancers' lead at 17:20 but Lambeth responded just 14 seconds later to restore their lead to 7-4. (photos/Nina Van Lieshout) SHDHS senior girls basketball EXETER — The South Huron District High School senior girls basketball team hosted Goderich and Mitchell Oct. 1. In their first game against Goderich, a slow start by the Panthers enabled the visitors to build momentum and eventually defeat South Huron in a 48-32 battle. A late surge brought the game as close as five points. But it was as close as the Panthers could get despite some great fourth quarter scoring by Mairead O'Rourke who scored nine, Missy Pertschy getting six, Julia Roberts putting down 10 and Kacie Erb with four. The Panthers suffered their second loss this season. In the second game with Mitchell, the Panthers scored early and often from the perimeter and would not be denied their second win of an early season. Melanie Smith led the team with 12 points while Erb had nine and Roberts had a hard fought 11. The posts had a good game on the boards rebounding but found it tough to score in the paint. Despite the frustrations off the glass, the Panthers had a strong game defeating Mitchell 46-20. Junior girls EXETER — The South Huron District High School junior girls basketball team continued their winning ways against the Goderich Vikings and Mitchell Blue Devils Oct. 1. The game against Goderich again featured tight defence by all Panther players and was the key to winning the game. On the offensive side the Panthers broke the 30 point bar- rier en route to a 31-20 win. The Panthers second game against Mitchell turned out to be a barn burner as the Panthers took two overtime periods to score a team high 53 points and notch a 53 -49 win. Teri Stuckless had an outstand- ing day offensively with 37 points. Nicole Insley added 15 while Taelor Douglas, Brooke Gielen and Danielle Daters had eight points each. Taylor Mattucci had four points on the day while Linette Melick, Gina Phoutthararath and Jaemi Douglas closed out the scoring with two points each. Coach Russ Watson congratula tes the team on a tremendous day. The Panthers next test will be against Stratford Northwestern and Listowel today (Wednesday).
