Communities in Bloom to hold meeting Oct. 23
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — A steering committee for Communities in Bloom is holding an informa-
tion meeting Oct. 23 at the Ranch House Inn at 7 p.m.
Committee member and South Huron Coun. Cathy Seip said the group is gearing
up to participate in the Communities in Bloom competition next summer Anyone
interested in the program is invited to attend the upcoming meeting. The group is
also looking for more members and volunteers to help with the beautification of
Exeter by helping with pulling weeds, picking up garbage and working on flower
beds.
The Communities in Bloom competition states it is "a Canadian non-profit organi-
zation committed to fostering civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautifi-
cation through community participation and the challenge of a friendly competition."
The competition began in Canada in 1995 with 29 communities, a number that has
since grown to hundreds.
Communities are judged in eight categories: tidiness; environmental awareness;
community involvement; natural and cultural heritage conservation; tree/urban for-
est management; landscaped areas; floral displays; and turf and groundcovers.
"We look good but we can always look better," Seip said of Exeter. She said the
committee, which is a new committee formed under South Huron council, has 15
members. Seip added it will take a lot of work to get the program going, including
submitting a book to judges detailing information about the area.
Seip said the community will be judged in July.
She added the committee wants to address the issue of weeds behind the buildings
on Main Street and may ask art students at South Huron District High School to paint
artwork in the windows of empty Main Street storefronts to make them more attrac-
tive.
Seip recently attended the Communities in Bloom awards convention in Woodstock
and spoke to judges about what the local committee needs to do to prepare for next
year's competition.
Seip said she would like to see the whole community pull together and would also
like the participation of local schools and churches.
At the Oct. 23 meeting, the group will choose projects and areas to begin working
on. For more information, call Seip at 235-2828.
