Fall Rally for the Women's
Missionary Society
Huron -Perth Women's
Missionary Society held their fall
rally in Atwood Presbyterian
Church on Sept. 24. They were
welcomed by the minister, Rev.
Alan Barr and Ruth Dewar on
behalf of the Atwood groups.
The meeting opened with the
call to worship and a responsive
Psalm. The W.M.S. purpose was
repeated in unison followed by
the theme hymn, He's got the
whole world in His hands. Lois
Horne gave a reading, Living
Together.
The morning speaker was Jerri
Hergott who spoke on Scripture
and the Hive. She told of the life
of the honey bee and how God
works with the hives as he works
with people. God has a specific
purpose for us just as he has for
the queens, workers and drones
of the bee family. Ruth Hart
reviewed several new books.
Atwood ladies served a delicious
lunch.
Following the lunch, Joyce
Schalk and Kate Tormey of
Atwood sang a duet. Monkton
Ladies conducted the devotions.
Lois Horne introduced the guest
speaker, former W.M.S. council
president, Margaret Mcgillvrey,
Goderich, who showed slides and
told of her experiences in
Taiwan with seven other W.M.S.
ladies. She noted that many
Taiwanese spoke English.
The roll call was answered
with an interesting fact about a
country that began with the
same letter as the name of the
group. Lois Horne read a story,
"With Skin On." Cromarty was
in charge of the offering and
dedication. Treasurer, Elizabeth
Stewart, Monkton, reported that
offerings over $29,000 had been
sent to Toronto.
Jean Edmunds, Mitchell gave
the registration report showing
an attendance of 57. The presi-
dent, Bernice Richards, Stratford
announced several upcoming
events - Huron -Perth executive
meeting in Mitchell on Oct. 15 at
1:30 p.m.; Annual meeting Feb.
4, 2008; Schneider's Choir at
Atwood, Oct. 5. She also read a
letter thanking the Presbyterial
for knitted vests and other arti-
cles and encouraged everyone to
keep knitting.
Motherwell-Avonbank gave the
courtesy remarks and the meet-
ing closed with the poem, Christ
has no hands but ours, and the
hymn, Let All Things Now Living.
The closing prayer was given by
St. Andrews, Stratford. Ruth
Laing, president / secretary.

Help celebrate World Rural Women's Day
HURON — More than one-
quarter of all women in the
world are rural women and
Women Today of Huron
(WTH) wants to celebrate
the important role many of
these women play in our
lives here in Huron County.
Oct. 15 is World Rural
Women's Day (WRWD) and
WTH will be holding an open
house to give the public a
chance to learn more about
the work it does with rural
women. Everyone is invited
to the 45 West St. office in
Goderich Oct. 15 to help cel-
ebrate rural women. Join

World Rural Women's Day
began at the UN Conference
for Women in Beijing in
September 1995. Devoting a
day to recognizing rural
women was seen as a practi-
cal way to celebrate and
support the multiple roles of
rural women who are mostly
farmers and small entrepre-
neurs.
The theme for this year's
day is 'The Right to Food:
Rural Women Produce and
Provide.'
Women produce on aver-
age more than half of all the
food that is grown: up to 80
per cent in Africa, 60 per
cent in Asia, and between 30
and 40 per cent in Latin
America and western coun-
tries.
But despite the large role
women play in the produc-
tion of food, women own
only two per cent of the land
and receive only one per
cent of all agricultural credit.

I don't know what 1 want to do. Is university or college better? Or
should 1 just work for a while? There's nothing for me in Huron County
New jobs are invented every day. How am 1 supposed to know what
courses to take? I can't afford a farm and all that equipment but I'm
attracted to agricultural jobs. What are my options? I keep hearing that
the Internet makes work more global. How does that affect me? Life
long learning? What does it mean? If 1 have to borrow money for my
education how can I afford to pay it back and still have a life?
