The Times Advocate, 2007-10-10, Page 1010 Times -Advocate Wednesday, October 10, 2007 Queensway meals planned for Oct. 21 HENSALL — Queensway residents were pleased to have three of the candidates for the coming election, visit on Thurs., Oct. 4 when Queensway hosted a meet and greet event. One resident who is 100 years old was anxious to have the proposed electoral change explained to her so that she could make an informed decision on voting day. October is Pastoral Care Awareness month and Queensway celebrated by hosting the South Huron Ministerial Members for their monthly meeting and luncheon Tues., Oct. 2. Area clergy perform an invaluable service when they provide weekly church services and visitation to their members who are now in long term care. Thank you to Hessenland for hosting the residents as well volunteer drivers Edna Deitz, Kay Mock and Betty Simmons for pro- viding the transportation. Geri Fashions had a wonderful selection of fall fashions during their day long "Stop and Shop" on Thursday. Residents welcomed the opportunity to view the new fall styles and colours. Queensway was a sea of pink on Friday when staff and residents dressed in pink to raise aware- ness of the fight against Breast Cancer. Officers attended and after a short search, apprehended three Exeter youths. Two males were held in custody for a bail hearing in Goderich and a third youth was released unconditionally. Exeter residents are still reminded to be vigilant about locking their vehicles both day and night and leaving nothing inside a vehicle that would interest a thief. Capsule Comments by Ernie Miatello Women generally tolerate oral contraceptives well. However, it you take them and notice any pain or swelling in the leg, shortness of breath, chest pain, severe headaches, double or loss of vision, severe stomach pain or breast lumps, contact your doctor immediately. Today's birth control pills contain much lower hormone concentrations and cause fewer problems than those even twenty years ago. Flu outbreaks are generally named for the place the first outbreak occurred. Examples include the "Spanish" flu which killed more than 20 million people in 1918-19. The "Asian" flu of 1957-58 killed over 100,000 in North American and the U.K. alone There was also a "Russian" flu in 1977. Thanks to flu vaccines, we don't see that scale of flu devastation anymore. Just another reminder about today's flu vaccines: It cannot give you the flu. The vaccine is made from a killed virus so has no flu activity. Its only job is to help your immune system create antibodies to give you protection against the virus. California and Oregon are quite progressive states in matters of the environment. In the early 90s, Oregon restricted the use of those light foam plastic containers in the food and beverage industry. In June of this year, San Francisco banned these materials also. We are lagging behind in Canada but we can make individual decisions not to accept them as doggie -bags and take-out containers. Huron Apothecary Ltd.
