Successful week for Panthers
EXETER — It was a suc-
cessful week for the South
Huron District High School
field hockey Panthers.
On Sept. 24, they travelled
to St. Anne's to play Stratford
Northwestern.
Melissa Cronyn opened the
scoring after 16 minutes and
the score remained 1-0 until
after the half.
Lindsay Mills opened the
scoring early in the second
half, assisted by rookie Marlee
Heywood and Kristen
Ferguson.
Midway through the second
half, Cronyn notched her sec-
ond assisted by Mills and
Sandra Gregus.
Just before the end of the
game, Cronyn scored her hat
trick from a Gregus penalty
corner.
She should have had a
fourth with a rocket into the
net, but it was disallowed by
the umpire.
The final score was 4-1
which improved the Panthers
record to 2-1.
South Huron then travelled
to Listowel for another single
5 p.m. game, with Listowel
providing the opposition.
The Panthers romped over
the locals to the tune of 6-0.
Staci Miller opened the scor-
ing from a Gregus penalty
corner.
Midway into the first half,
Abbey Oke scored on a
rebound from a Lauren
Haberer shot.
The score at the half was 2-
0 for the Panthers.
Very early in the second
half, Mills scored assisted by
Haberer.
Almost immediately, Miller
scored her second assisted by
Ferguson and Gregus on
another penalty corner.
Midway through the period,
Gregus notched her own goal
after a great individual effort.
Just before the end of the
game, rookie Emily Lacasse
scored her first career goal
after some determined effort.
On the weekend, the team
participated in the annual St.
John's -Kilmarnock
Invitational, where a few of
the best teams in the province
are in attendance.
In the first game, the
Waterloo Oxford Duckies pro-
vided the opposition.
The game was even in the
first half, with both teams
having chances but the
defences proved stubborn.
However, Waterloo ended
the first half ahead 1-0.
Three minutes into the sec-
ond half, Staci Miller scored
after a strong effort by Karly
Bryson.
The Panthers applied
tremendous pressure, but
could not score again and
against the run of play, the
Duckies scrambled in a whi-
ner for a 2-1 final.
In the second game against
arch rivals Notre Dame from
Burlington, the Panthers took
the game to them and were
awarded a goal near the end
of the first half with Ferguson
forcing home a Gregus drive.
The Panther midfield domi-
nated the game, but again as
in the first game, their efforts
could not produce another
goal.
Three minutes from the end
of the game, the Irish scored a
dubious goal as the ball was
hit from outside the scoring
circle and after the two
umpires talked, they decided
to award a goal to tie the
game.
The final game was a
rematch with the host SJK
team.
The first time the two teams
met this year, it was a rather
one sided affair with the
Panthers being on the receiv-
ing end.
SJK was still the more pol-
ished and accomplished team
this time winning 2-0, but the
Panthers put on a much more
aggressive and smart perfor-
mance.
The Panther back line of
Bryson, Pfaff, Schroeder and
Haberer performed heroically
during this game, together
with Michelle Boere in net.
Overall, this tournament
proved to the girls that they
could up their game and com-
pete with the best in the
province.
The team was in St. Marys
on Monday to play St. Anne's
and then have no more league
games for two weeks.
This large layoff is due to
the effort of the Boards of
Education to "reduce the
amount of curriculum time
lost," but hurts the students'
chances of improving skills in
this sport.

were on the fourth hole on Monday with Frank Dumont on one of his many trips around
the course during the day. Starting at 7:05 a.m. and finishing at 3:10 p.m. Dumont golfed 100
holes to raise money for Parkinsons, with a score of 434 on the day. Currently Dumont has
raised over $1,000 and to donate, contact Ironwood at 235-1521.(photo/Pat Bolen)

EXETER — The South Huron
District High School Panthers'
Junior Girls basketball team host-
ed their tournament Sept. 21-22
and had a great weekend.
After an opening round loss to
the tournament champion
Oakridge Oaks Friday night, the
Panthers rebounded to defeat the
Central Huron Redmen 25-17 and
the London Christian Pioneers 27-
18 on Saturday to win the consola-
tion championship.
Coach Russ Watson said once
again great defence by every team
member was the Panthers trade-
mark in the last two games.
Teri Stuckless led all scorers
with 26 points including nine free
throws in the game against Central
Huron.
Nicole Insley added 10 and
Alyssa Becker found her scoring
touch contributing seven.
The rest of the scoring was
shared by eight other players.
The Panthers were in action at
home Sept. 26 against the F.E
Madill Mustangs.
South Huron roared out to a 16-
12 halftime lead against the
F.E.Madill Mustangs yesterday but
a 17-4 third quarter run by their
opponents declawed the Panthers.
A spirited comeback gave the
Panthers a 11-8 advantage in the
fourth quarter but it wasn't
enough as the Mustangs won 37-
27.
Stuckless again led all scorers
with seven points while Insley had
a strong offensive game with six.
Danielle Daters added four points
and some brilliant defensive plays
while Becker, Taelor Douglas,
Melanie Hern, Taylor Obre and
Gina Phouttharath added two
points each.
