Exeter Fury picked up
a split in their two
games last week, whi-
ning 2-0 Wednesday
against St. Thomas
and dropping a 3-0
decision in St. Marys
on Sunday.
In Exeter Sept. 19
the Fury got their first
look at St. Thomas this
season.
Exeter took the play
to the visitors early on
in the game.
The Fury opened the
scoring midway
through the first half
when Craig Docking
sent a cross to Roger
Mills on the right side.
Mills,, who was
standing near the end
line, crossed it into the
centre and Nick
Williams headed the
ball over the keeper's
outstretched hand.
A few minutes later,
Ryan Ralph took a
shot from 25 yards out
which fooled the keep-
er and snuck in just
over the line.
In the second half,
Exeter kept pressing
and Stu Parsons made
a beautiful chip over
the goalie, only to have
it rejected by the
crossbar.
Mills almost made it
3-0, but his shot from
a sharp angle just
missed the far post.
Corey Firth also hit
the crossbar as the
game was coming to a
close.
The Exeter defense
was solid once again,
limiting the St.
Thomas scoring
chances in front of
Ryan Masse.
"This was another
solid team effort like
we've seen in the
recent past only this
time, we got the result
that we deserved,"
stated team
spokesperson Shawn
McFalls.
"Everyone's head
was in the game and
we all came to play."
Against the first
place St. Marys squad
Exeter was again kept
off the scoresheet by
the stingy home
squad.
The play was even in
the opening minutes of
the contest with
Exeter managing a
few offensive rushes of
their own.
Pete McAllister's
hard shot was deflect-
ed by the keeper and
Docking's follow-up
shot sailed just wide of
the open side.
A turnover at mid-
field resulted in the
first St. Marys goal on
a long shot that beat
Masse to his right.
The game remained
scoreless at the half
with neither team hav-
ing many excellent
scoring opportunities.
The home team
started to take it to the
Fury in the second half
and picked up a two -
goal lead on a passing
play that sent a striker
in alone, beating
Masse cleanly.
Exeter's best chance
to get on the board
happened a few min-
utes later when
Docking's cross found
Parsons at the top of
the box.
A quick turnaround
shot was saved at the
last second by the St.
Marys keeper to keep
the shutout in place.
Moments later the
division leaders iced
the game on a break-
away that Masse had
no chance on to make
the final score 3-0.
The Fury have one
game remaining on
Sunday hi St. Thomas
where they hope to
improve on their 7-6-4
record.
