WHEN OUR MOTHER BLOWS
OUT HER BIRTHDAY CANDLES...
Through the years she had hollered, said and prayed, "Dear God,
grant me patience!" 1,576,800 times.
Her hands have hung diapers on pulley and stationary
clotheslines, sterilized bottles, carried babies from upstairs and down
and from the barn to the house, ironed mounds and mounds of
laundry and proudly pushed baby buggies. She has looked after all
her children with an abundance of love not only once but multiplied
seven times.
She has peeled more potatoes than six marines on KP duty.
She should have a theological degree as she has blessed,
listened to, counselled, served and cooked at her church throughout
the years and has taught Sunday School to some families' childrens'
children.
She should have a veterinarian's degree as she has neutered,
combed, beheaded, plucked, milked, petted, fed, rode, weighed,
mothered and chased animals of every description.
She should have an agricultural degree as she has drove tractor,
planted, plowed, harvested, baled, stacked and worked side by side
with her husband Alvin, in all aspects of the farming industry.
Her hair has been in plastic curlers, kerchiefs, hats, caps,
permed, tonied and turned silver.
The "Parlour" was where she entertained company, the "Pantry"
held the groceries, the "Icebox" held gallons and gallons of ice
cream, the "wood shed" held her sauerkraut and pickles and the
"wringer washing machine" was hers to use on her special washing
days.
She has not only earned her nursing degree through professional
schooling, but through measles, chicken pox, mumps, pneumonia,
fevers, stitches, flu, fractured limbs and of course, broken hearts.
At one time or another her closet held housedresses, feathered
hats, white gloves, skirts with short and long hemlines, pantsuits,
billowy dresses or chiffon, sheath dresses, a Sunday coat and the
Christmas toys she was hiding after ordering them from the Sears or
Eatons Wishbook catalogue.
Her attic was always a warehouse... In bulk you could shop for
Kleenex, toilet paper, flour, sugar, oatmeal, cereal, cereal, cereal and
more cereal.
Her heart has known the pleasure of a man's love, the joy of
children, the worry of her children's problems, the heartbreak of
sorrow, the warmth of life's friendships, the love of sisters and
sisters-in-law, the celebrations of weddings, the magnificent
blessings of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Who can count the floors she scrubbed, the dinners she cooked,
the birthday gifts she wrapped, the spelling words and stories she
listened to, the bedtime stories she read, the excuses she heard, the
prayers she whispered to God each day?
Her arms have rocked generations of babies. Her hands have
prepared "favourite rhubarb pie" and countless recipes. Her knees
have knelt in prayer time and time again for those she loves. Her
mouth has kissed "owwies" that hurt. Her back has bent to bath dirty
miniature cowboys and wanna-be farmers, picked up teen's clothes,
gathered flowers and hoed vegetables from her garden.
She has journeyed through life with its tears and laughter,
watching yesterday's sunsets become tomorrow's sunrises of hope
and promise. Because of her and the man who took her hand, family
values, family life and love continued through the generations.
WHEN OUR MOTHER BLOWS OUT HER BIRTHDAY CANDLES...
BLESSED ARE THEY WHO SURROUND HER WITH THEIR LOVE.
Happy Birthday — September 25
