(photo/submitted) GRAND BEND — A water quality program for chil- dren is being held Sept. 29 in Grand Bend while adults are finding out about `Water Quality in Your Own Backyard.' The support of local funding partners has allowed the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) to create a new children's program, `Become a Water Quality Whiz.' The children's program is part of the Grand Bend Rotary Club's `Clean Water Now Initiative,' funded by the Rotary Club of Grand Bend, the Grand Bend Community Foundation and the Municipality of Community plant auction By Liz Sangster HENSALL CORRESPONDENT HENSALL - Come out and enjoy our first meal of the fall at the Hensall Drop -In on Sept. 20 at the Hensall United Church. Lunch will be served at 12 noon. Following lunch, we will be hearing music by Marlene Mathers. We hope you will all participate. Come on out for the fellowship and great food. We welcome all local individuals to this luncheon, held on the third Thursday of each month. The cost is $5 per person. If required, transportation can be provided. At Carmel Presbyterian Church the opening hymn was Praise to the Lord, the Almighty followed by the call to Worship and the prayer of adoration and confes- sion and assurance of pardon. The guest minister was Jan Maclnnis, a diaconal minister. Jan's message was "Molded by God". To illustrate her message Jan had everyone create a small pot with modelling clay. We listened to readings from Jeremiah and Philemon. The offering was received by Al Hoggarth and Harry Moir and dedicated. The closing hymn was Softly and Tenderly. The service closed with benediction. The Hensall and Community Horticultural Society will be holding a plant auction with Erik Jacobson of Parkway Gardens and Pirie Mitchell at Hensall United Church on Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m. Everyone welcome. Park Lambton Shores. Children regis- tered in the activity will receive an offi- cial certificate upon completion. The new children's program is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., featuring activities such as `Swamp Tromp.' The `Water Quality in Your Own Backyard' event for property owners is Sept. 29 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Southcott Pines Park Association Clubhouse at 10246 Lakeview Avenue, Grand Bend. The event features guest speakers from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment (MOE), the Municipality of Lambton Shores, the ABCA and the Huron County Health Unit. Topics include the Grand Bend Water Quality Monitoring Station, Lake Huron Water Quality Partnerships, Improving Water Quality Through Septic System Maintenance and Creating a Healthier Lake Huron, Old Ausable Channel and Ausable River Watershed. The event is Lecture Five in the Old Ausable Channel Lecture Series. "The Grand Bend and area community has shown leadership by supporting water quality protection efforts that begin locally," says co-ordinator of the Old Ausable Channel Long -Term Management Plan Kari Killins. Special music for diners ZURICH - Town and Country support service presented a program called Exercise in the Home which was led during July and August by Alex Peel. This will continue starting Sept. 5 at 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. (Prior to Dining for Seniors at the Zurich Complex) first and sec- ond week free. The instructors, Glena Olcen and Cecelia Farwell at a cost of $1 per week All diners wel- come to attend. Zurich diners enjoyed the music of Corky Bedard and Friends Glenn Deichert, Harvey Smith and George Mathonia with Phyli Deichert at the key- board, on Aug. 22. On Aug 29 we had a penny sale with winners Marie Whitney,Albert Deichert Yogi, Lottie Grenier, Marie Gelina, Ursula Regier, Ron Dau, and Gwen McKellar. The 50/50 draw was won by Ursula Regier and Pat Olcen. Man assaults police SOUTH HURON —A South Huron man was charged with assaulting police after a vehicle stop on London Road Aug. 30 or an improper helmet violation. The 48 -year-old male became confrontational with police and assistance from the public was used pending the arrival of additional officers. The male subject was also charged with failing to wear a proper helmet and failing to submit the vehicle for testing. He will appear in Exeter Court Oct. 25th. "The events on Sept. 29 provide chances to find out more about water quality and opportunities to improve our local resource from provincial, munici- pal, Conservation Authority and health unit person- nel," Killins adds. After the seminar, interested landowners can take an optional workshop on how to self -assess their home's environmental activities using the new Stewardship Guide for the Lake Huron Coastline. Landowners are asked to register for this and the other events Sept. 29.
