Granton Wesley United Church At the Granton -Wesley United Church on Sun., Sept. 9, Andy McBurney lit the Christ candle. Pastor Paul Vollick led the service, and the message was entitled "What does it really cost?" The Scripture reading was from Luke 14. The theme of the chil- dren's time was a welcome and VBS day one. UCW Unit 2 hosted the muffin social before the service. Prayer services have begun again every Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. and are being held at Granton -Wesley for September. A gala Harvest catered dinner is being planned for Oct. 12 at the Kirkton Woodham Community Centre as a fundraiser for the renovated church kitchen. More details forthcoming. St. Paul's Anglican Church At St. Paul's Anglican Church in Kirkton on Sun., Sept. 9 Rev. Dalice Sim led the service of morning prayer. The message was about taking advantage of the opportunities God gives us to show concern for others. Garth Blackler read the lessons. A time of fellow- ship followed the service. On Mon., Sept. 10 a group from Woodstock and area will have attended the induction of Rev. Christine Downey as rector of Trinity Southern Parish at Harrow. Christine previously trained as a student at St. Paul's, Kirkton. Pride of Huron Rebekah Lodge EXETER - Our new year started on Sept. 5. The offi- cers will be installed in Stratford on Sat., Sept. 8. DDP Marjorie Gibson will be making her official visit to our lodge at our meeting on Sept. 19. The evening will begin with a potluck supper at 6:30 p.m. Officers are to wear white. Fish Fry fundraiser Sept. 30 By Rhoda Rohde THAMES ROAD CORRESPONDENT THAMES ROAD - Church Service Rev. Judith Ritchie was in charge of the regular church service on Sunday morning. She lit the Christ candle. Everyone sang the open- ing hymn Jesus Stand Among Us. Rev. Judith gave words of wel- come and everyone passed the Peace. The Introit We Praise You For Your Love was sung. The call to Worship and the opening prayer were said in unison. Rev. Judith gave the announce- ments and Sharon Lynn gave the minute for council. Everyone sang Happy Birthday to Judith Parker whose birthday was Sept. 9. Rev. Judith and Beth Cooper talked about the 911 service disaster and Beth lit the red candle for Peace and also read a prayer. Rev. Judith and Justin Pym played "Follow the Leader" as did everyone else. Everyone sang the Lord's Prayer and read sections 1,3, and 4 of Psalm 139. The choir sang Deeper, Deeper accompanied by the pianist Jean Hodgert. Beth Cooper read the Gospel Lesson Luke 14:25-33. The title of Rev. Judith's message was "The God Connection." Everyone sang the hymn 0 Master Let Me Walk With Thee. The Affirmation of Faith "A New Creed" was read in unison. John and Ola Batten received the offer- ing as well as being the greeters. Everyone sang We Give Thee But Thine Own and read the offertory prayer in unison. Rev. Judith gave prayer of the people. Everyone sang the hymn Guide Me 0 Thou Great Jehovah. Rev. Judith gave the commission- ing and pronounced the benedic- tion. Everyone sang the choral benediction May The God of Hope Go With Us. Announcements Sept. 16 -Observer Sunday Service conducted by the Worship committee and the Outreach com- mittee. Sept. 23-Kirkton U.C. Chicken BBQ from 4 -7 p.m at the Kirton - Woodham Community Centre. Tickets are $13 in advance and $14 at the door. Children 10 and under are $6. Tickets can be pur- chased at the Kirkton Market or by calling Pam Benoit at 229-6931. Sept. 30-CLUC Service at Centralia U.C. with time and details to follow. Sept. 30 -Community Thanksgiving Service to be held at Trivitt Memorial Anglican Church, Exeter at 3:30 p.m. Following the service, there will be a "Shriners" Fish Fry fundraising dinner (tick- ets must be purchased) with pro- ceeds from the dinner going to South Huron Hospital. All children of the United Church up to age 14 are invited to partici- pate in an art contest called "With the Mission and Service Fund, We Are Helping Hands in the World." Personals Quite a number of people from this community attended the visi- tation and the funeral for the late Wilfred Hunkin on Wednesday at the Haskett Funeral Home, Exeter. Sympathy is extended to his wife Viola and family John and Margaret Johns and Matthew his THAMES ROAD NEWS sister Eleanor Hendrick and sister in law Wilma Love and other rela- tives. A number of relatives attended the visitation Thursday for the late Janet (Kestle) Schroeder at the A. Millard George Funeral Home and also the funeral on Friday at Mount Zion United Church in London. Sympathy is extended to her husband Jim and family and other relatives. Get well wishes are extended to Bev Delbridge who is a patient in South Huron Hospital Exeter at time of writing. Ross and Kay Hodgert and Bill and Rhoda Rohde went to London on Wednesday night for supper and then to a show. The occasion being the Hodgerts 53rd Wedding Anniversary and the Rohdes 59th Anniversary on Sept. 11. Appreciation night Recognition — A Staff Appreciation Event was held at Queensway Nursing and Retirement Residence Sept. 5.
