The club, founded in 1976 and established in 2000 as a non- profit organization, is growing and has about 60 members, vice- president Ken Hoggart told the Times -Advocate Sunday during the club's year-end barbecue. The club received a $13,500 Trillium grant in the spring, allow- ing them to buy a new trap machine, which is beneficial for shooters because it holds more birds and offers more challenging shooting for participants. Also, the former trap machine was old and starting to become unreliable, Hoggart said. The grant was also used to install new sidewalks at the club's skeet and trap shooting range. The new sidewalks allow easier movement for all club members, but particularly for those in wheelchairs. Hoggart notes the Claybird Gun Club is growing. He said the club takes safety "very seriously" and has never had an accident in its history. In addition to skeet and trap shooting, the club has a 25 -yard handgun range, something for which participants need government qualifications and safety course specifications to take part in. Hoggart said a designated range officer is on hand at all times. Shooting season at Claybird lasts from April to the end of October with shooting nearly every weekend. Members come mostly from Huron and Middlesex counties, with a handful of members from London.
