Exeter Senior Rookies are OBA champions
EXETER — The
Exeter Eagles went
a perfect 5 and 0
to win the Ontario
B a s e b a l l
Association Rookie
Senior "D" division
provincial champi-
onship held in
Exeter Aug. 31 to
Sept. 1.
The Eagles' out-
standing bats were
evident in their
first game Friday
night as they han-
dled MacGregor
27-4.
On Saturday,
Exeter's offence
was again strong
with 22-6 and
22-0 victories over
Tilbury and
Delaware, respec-
tively.
In the semi-final
game, played
Sunday morning,
the Eagles faced a
well-prepared
Belle River team.
Belle River went
out to an early 1-0
lead and the Eagles
had trouble finding
their groove in the
early going.
However, they
came alive in the
third inning, scor-
ing five runs. They
never looked back
from there, and
went on to a 13-1
win.
"The score is
somewhat deceiv-
ing," said coach
Dave Reid, "as our
defence really shut
them down."
In the champi-
onship game, the
Eagles once again
faced Delaware.
As Delaware had
one loss, they had
to beat Exeter
twice to claim the
championship.
The Eagles start-
ed strong and had
an 11-3 lead at the
third inning.
However, a deter-
mined Delaware
squad had a huge
fourth inning, leav-
ing the score tied
12-12 after four
innings
With the Eagles
tiring they needed
a spark to ignite
them and that
spark came from
the bat of Ray
Delbridge, who hit
a rocket, resulting
in a two -run home
run in the fifth, to
give his team a
14-12 lead.
The Eagles held
Delaware scoreless
in the bottom of
the fifth, and the
momentum swung
Exeter's way.
The Eagles
scored a further
seven runs, to give
themselves a 21-14
lead entering the
bottom of the sev-
enth and final
inning.
Delaware rallied
again, and scored
four in the bottom
of the seventh, but
Exeter kept their
composure, and
made sure of their
outs.
The shortstop
and second base -
man combination
of Justin McCarter
and John Baker
made the final out
seem routine, but
it was anything but
routine for this
hardworking team,
who finally saw all
of their effort pay
off with a 21 - 18
victory.
The Eagles are
the first Exeter
team to win a
provincial champi-
onship at the
Rookie Senior
level. Reid said all
of the coaches and
parents are
extremely proud of
their squad, who
ended the season
with an excellent
26 and 12 record.
Reid also com-
mended tourna-
ment convenor Jeff
Keller whose
unsurpassed orga-
nizational and dis-
pute resolution
skills were fully
displayed on the
weekend.
