Current CAO Larry Brown, who has been with South Huron since 2000, has decided to leave his post with the municipality to become the chair- person of the Ausable Bayfield Maitland Valley Drinking Water Source Protection Committee. He is tentatively scheduled to leave his CAO job at the end of September, when he goes to Toronto for training for his new job. Brown will remain a South Huron resident, living outside Grand Bend. The Source Protection Committee (SPC) will oversee the planning process to establish programs and policies that will protect local munici- pal drinking water sources. There are 19 such committees across Ontario, Brown said, and the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority will lead local efforts. While Brown has been appointed chairperson, the rest of the committee hasn't yet been chosen. Brown was chosen for his new job by Minister of the Environment Laurel Broten. "We'll go through a process of assessing the water resources in the area," Brown says, "and then do an analysis of the risks to those resources and then come up with a plan as to how to protect those resources." Brown points out the regulations will be for the protection of municipal water and at this point don't involve private property. The regulations fall under the 2006 Clean Water Act. Once regulations are developed, it will be municipal councils passing and enforcing them. Brown said while by the end of this year Exeter will no longer be sup- plied by municipal wells (because of the new Lake Huron water pipeline), See BROWN page 2 Kirkton fair this weekend KIRKTON — If it's September that means it's time for the annual Kirkton Fall Fair.
