London man receives jail time for resisting arrest
EXETER — A London man received 50 days in jail for
resisting arrest and possessing marijuana in an incident
in Huron Park March 15.
William A. Smith, 22, appeared in Exeter Court Aug.
23 before Justice R.G. Hunter and pleaded guilty to
charges of possession and resisting arrest. The court
heard that on March 15 Smith's mother
called police to her Huron Park home
reporting that Smith had arrived home
intoxicated where he began to be argu-
mentative and destructive. Police arrived
on the scene and asked Smith to put down
a beer he was holding. He refused and
was verbally abusive to the officers.
An officer then took the beer out of Smith's hand.
Smith then resisted when officers put him down on the
couch. After a struggle, he was arrested, where mari-
juana was discovered in his pocket.
Smith received 45 days for resisting arrest and five
days for the possession charge. He is to serve his time on
weekends and received 12 months probation. Hunter
also gave Smith a five-year weapons prohibition.
A charge of assault was dropped.

$1,170 in lottery tickets, $49 in cash and $550 from the
coin safe at Mac's Milk in Exeter on Nov. 18, 2006.
The court heard that Aphayvong was a former
employee of the store.
He then redeemed the stolen lottery tick-
ets at SK Convenience in Exeter the next
day for $203.
Hunter gave Aphayvong one year to pay
full restitution to Mac's Milk and the
Ontario Lottery Corporation. He is also
banned from Mac's and is to perform 75
hours of community service.

$300 and $200 for failing to comply with an order and

VARNA — The Zurich arena complex will be getting
better water after the tender for a water softener was
approved Monday night at Bluewater council.
Facilities manager Tom Dickens said the quote from
Wade Berard Plumbing for $13,645 was the lowest for
the purchase and installation of a water softening sys-
tem for the arena.
Dickens said the other attempts to solve the problem
of the hard water at the arena have failed and the
process has been dragged out because of questions
about what equipment is required to complete the job.
He added the cost of the water softener and the oper-
ating budget will be offset by reduced maintenance on
equipment and supplies.
In other business chief building official Brad Dietrich
provided the July building report to council and said
while there have been 122 building permits issued this
year compared to 130 last year, the total value as of
July 31 was $10,872,575 compared to $8,391,133,70
last year.
Dietrich said there have also been 25 septic permits
issued this year and six demolition permits.
