Exeter Express sweep Forest
EXETER — The Exeter Express recently swept Forest
in a best -of -seven series.
Team spokesperson Joe Fulop said game three
appeared to be an easy win as the Express rolled to a 9-
0 lead by the fifth inning but had to hang on for a 9-5
win and a 3-0 lead in the series.
The possibility of a mercy rule ending seemed to be
there, said Fulop, but Forest rallied over the last two
innings for five runs and had two runners on base to
make things interesting.
Curtis Meyers pitched the first four innings and looked
good striking out five and allowing only one hit. An
injury to his hip ended his evening.
His replacement was Marty Merner who made his first
appearance in the series.
He was outstanding for his first three innings allowing
one hit before two walks and an error in his fourth
inning finished his evening.
Forest scored three unearned runs in the eighth
inning.
Merner showed much resemblance to the fine playoff
form that has been his trademark over the years.
Jason Cox pitched next for an inning and was respon-
sible for the final two Forest runs.
Cox threw the ball hard but was a little erratic in his
brief appearance, said Fulop.
Terry Hogg came to the rescue and pitching with two
days of rest he shut Forest down in the ninth as he
retired three consecutive batters with three strikeouts.
The Express hitters were held to seven hits in the
game.
They used a walk to Rob Burk, a double by Bobbie
Grant (whose batting average is still over .500 for the
season) and a single by Adam Leppington to score two
runs in the first.
Dan Masse drew a walk and was driven home by a
Tim Eifert double in the fourth.
The big rally of six runs for Exeter came in the fifth.
With two out the Express combined hits from Aaron
Patterson, Burk and Eifert along with walks to Grant,
Lonnie Hawke, Leppington and Masse to rally for a
nine -run lead.
The Express had two errors which led to three
unearned runs but overall, they played a solid game,
said Fulop.
The Express completed their sweep over Forest with
an 8-0 win Friday. Fulop said the game was closer than
the final score showed. Many Express players played
excellent games, he added.
The team was led by Dan Masse who was outstanding
allowing one unearned run on four hits. Masse stated
that he had all four of his pitches working for the first
time in the season. It would benefit the team to have
him do as well in Wallaceburg.
Adam Leppington hit two monster triples that likely
would have been home runs had the wind not been so
strong. He also ran down several tough catches in the
outfield.
Fulop said the team will need his present level of per-
formance in tournament play.
Aaron Patterson made many astounding plays again,
Fulop said.
"(Manager) Doug Fairbairn and I discussed how good
he really is," Fulop said. "We think he can now be com-
pared favourably with local legend John Hayter from
the Dashwood Tiger era."
Bobbie Grant was held to two walks but also stole two
bases. Lonnie Hawke had a hit and a walk. Dan Masse
walked twice. Tim Eifert chipped in with a long double
and two walks. Darwin Barker had a solid single.
Game three saviour Terry Hogg had a hit and a walk.
Dave Russell made his debut at second base and was a
near vacuum defensively on balls hit into his zone.
The Express lead was only 2-0 until the sixth when
they scored three times. Three more runs completed the
scoring over the last two innings.
Crediton fastball team ends season in second place
CREDITON - Something has to be said about the
power of teammates working together to create
a success story. The Crediton Jr./Int. fastball
team should be commended for its powerful
ability and camaraderie throughout the season.
The team ended the season winning three big
games to clinch second place out of 14 teams.
This highly -talented team of twelve girls with
affiliates Kelli Fulton, Julie Prout, Caitlin Gaiser,
Natalie LaPorte and Katelyn Squire know they
can play as strongly as the larger centres.
Crediton 5 vs Oakridge 1
Oakridge wanted the win on Crediton's home
turf as they were very close behind in the stand-
ings. Crediton's key hits and defensive plays
secured the win.
Oakridge jumped on the scoreboard early in
the first inning but Crediton replied with Amber
Preszcator's single, moved to scoring position by
Kathy Glen and then sent home with Marianne
Scott's single.
Kerri Fulton, Glen and Scott led their team at
the plate with two single hits apiece. Cathy
Conlin pounded out a double in the third inning
scoring two runs. Single hits came from Megan
Preszcator, Rachel Michielsen and Julie Prout.
Kerri Fulton was a real force at shortstop with a dou-
ble play to Carrie Dixon and another by scooping up a
ball tossing to Carie Pertschy on second who tossed to
Dixon at first base.
Kathy Glen's double play from left field was a specta-
tor's treat with a catch and a hard throw to first to get
the runner.
Marianne Scott's pitching was very powerful, notching
four strikeouts and allowing only a maximum of four
runners per inning.
Crediton 10 vs Strathroy 5
Crediton started the game slowly against Strathroy
allowing three runs in the first liming. Crediton's bats
came alive in the fourth inning and the team kept scor-
ing runs every inning to the seventh.
Kathy Glen's prowess on short stop and her bat were
certainly keys to the win. Glen pounded out a home run,
double and two singles. Megan Preszcator's triple and
double combined with Marianne Scott's two doubles
and Amber Preszcator's triple and single scored several
runs. Helping the cause with two single hits apiece were
Rachel Michielsen, Cathy Conlin, Nikki Cyr and Carrie
Dixon.
Cyr made some great plays at second base to capture
hard hit balls.
Captain Carie Pertschy has become a perfect utility
player as a pitcher and excelling at infield and outfield
positions.
Carrie Dixon's pitching always amazes the crowd as it
seems the more she pitches in a game, the stronger she
becomes. Dixon notched six strikeouts.
Crediton 10 vs Otterville 0
Crediton started its rally in the third inning
scoring three runs but finished off Otterville's
chance of recovery hi the fifth scoring seven
runs.
Angie Gould's key catches in left field and her
strong bat helped clinch the win. Gould pound-
ed out a triple, double and a single. Megan
Preszcator reached base in all four trips to the
plate with three singles and a walk. Kathy
Glen's strength pounded out a double and
home run and Marianne Scott's single and
home run to left field emptied the bases. Cathy
Conlin hit a long double in the third inning to
score runs and added a single. Amber
Preszcator added two single hits while single
hits came from the bats of Rachel Michielsen
and Jessica Davies.
Angie Gould, Cathy Conlin and Carie Pertschy
played exceptionally strong field to stop their
opposition.
Marianne Scott was powerful as the pitcher
notching five strikeouts and again only allowing
a maximum of four batters per inning.
The Crediton squad concludes its season this weekend
at the Stronach Park in London.
