Jack Russell Racing Club proving popular in second season
By Nina Van Lieshout
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
LUCAN — The idea came to Lucan resident Kris King
after getting her very own Jack Russell, "Maggie," who
is three years old and also the mascot of the club.
Now into its second season, the Lucan and Area Jack
Russell Racing Club is generating a lot of interest
throughout the Lucan and area community.
"There was a lack of racing in the area. Racing is a
great thing for Jack Russells," says King, adding, "it's a
structured environment where they run off their ener-

Lucan and area dog owners have registered 25 dogs
for racing since the beginning of the season May 12,
something King is pleased with, explaining last year was
more of a promotion.
King says although it's called the Lucan and Area
Jack Russell Racing Club, "any breed under 17 inches
can come out."
The racing club, formed April 15, 2006, is a non-prof-
it, not -sanctioned club, with several purposes including,
"Raising Jack Russell terrier awareness, providing an
outlet for Jack Russell terriers, bringing an attraction to
Lucan and providing a support for other non-profit
organizations," according to King.
Racers come from all over Southwestern Ontario,
attending racing events in Lucan, Forest, Denfield and
more.
King says to join there is a small fee, but anyone inter-
ested can also pay a registration fee at each race they
would like to attend. Muzzles are also available for a
small fee.
King says it's not just a race, "it turns into a show,"
explaining some dogs are upset with the mandatory
muzzle which must stay on during the race, but many
are a little confused.
King says while watching the dogs race it seems
sometimes as though they're having fun, it's like "I
guess I'm running but I don't know why," she laughs.
Others finish the race and then run to the other side and
do it again.

And they're off —The Lucan and Area Jack Russell Racing Club is becoming a popular event in the Lucan
and area community. Founder and Lucan resident Kris King says the numbers are up from last year when the

legged, long legged and seniors.
Ribbons are given to dogs finishing first, second and
third.
The races are generally twice a month between May
and October. This year King is hoping the racing club
can run past October, possibly even featuring dog sled
races as an added perk.
King says, "Everything's been incredible, with the
