Motivate kids to learn over the summer
(NC)—You are not
alone if you worry about
your child losing the
learning momentum
during the summer
months. While each
child achieves at a dif-
ferent pace, for many, a
two-month break every
year can be quite a set-
back.
Research in this field
shows that when classes
are over, children expe-
rience a learning loss of
an estimated 2.4
months for reading
comprehension and 2.6
months for mathematics
and computation. The
math loss is greater
because, unlike the
written word, it is not as
easy to integrate math
into an everyday experi-
ence.
"Children cannot
afford this loss," says
Dr. Donna McGhie-
Richmond, educational
specialist with Kumon
Math and Reading
Centres. "This is espe-
cially true for children
who struggle with their
school work."
The key to keeping
skills sharp over the
summer is regular prac-
tice, she said. The chal-
lenge for parents is to
insert a learning compo-
nent into summer days -
and more importantly,
to do it with the accep-
tance and enthusiasm of
their child. In addition
to the usual summer
activities, Dr. McGhie-
Richmond suggests the
following tips for contin-
ued learning:
• Encourage your child
to keep a journal or
diary of summer experi-
ences.
• Encourage postcard
writing when you're
away. Postcards are fun
to choose and because
of limited space, your
child needs to think
carefully before writing.
• Keep a daily record
of 'unplugged' activities
such as books read,
games played, letters
written and/or other
activities during the
break. At the end of
each week, talk about
which activities the fam-
ily enjoyed most.
• If taking a family
trip, let your child assist
with the budgeting and
purchasing for the
event.
• Enrol your child in a
supplemental education
program. The summer
months are an ideal
time to continue or start
a structured program
such as Kumon. It is a
minimal time commit-
ment, requiring a bit of
work each day on read-
ing and/or mathematics,
and the consistency
helps children become
more disciplined while
improving their acade-
mic skills.
• Make a habit of clip-
ping interesting news
stories and posting them
on the refrigerator for
your family to read and
discuss.
• Make greeting cards
by cutting words and
letters from newspa-
pers. It's fun and is sure
to be 'a keeper' for
whoever receives it.
"Reading aloud to chil-
dren is the single most
important activity for
building the knowledge
