ARCA works toward web mapping portal going live
ONTARIO — A new web mapping portal, camaps.ca
went live recently, with the Ausable Bayfield
Conservation Authority (ABCA) as one of six conserva-
tion authorities which have worked closely together to
launch the pilot project mapping website.
Visitors to a new Internet mapping portal at
www.camaps.ca will have the ability to create and view
custom maps showing a wide variety of natural and
human -made features in a variety of watersheds across
Ontario.
The camaps.ca portal is a one-stop site for data, maps
and other information resources related to watersheds
in Ontario for three key user
groups including municipal staff,
conservation authority staff and
the public.
High-resolution imagery as
recent as 2006 is available, pro-
viding a bird's eye view of a vari-
ety of Ontario watersheds and
conservation authority jurisdic-
tions. More detailed views of the
information layers become visi-
ble as the user zooms in and
pans around to see different
areas of the watershed.
"This new service has just gone
live to the public and it offers
some powerful mapping tools to
access aerial photography and
learn more about the features in
your local watershed," says ABCA GIS/CAD Information
Specialist Tracey Boitson.
Six conservation authorities and Conservation Ontario,
supported by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources
(MNR), have created public access to the common
Internet mapping application that will help to increase
mapping service capacities for conservation authority
related data across the province.
The participating conservation authorities feature the
ABCA, St. Clair Region Conservation Authority, Toronto
and Region Conservation Authority, Ganaraska Region
Conservation Authority, Mississippi Valley Conservation
Authority and Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority.
The pilot project includes the development of a busi-
ness plan that will examine long-term issues such as
administration costs, number of potential users, finan-
cial implications, fee structures and membership costs.
The new, piloted web service includes data on ABCA
properties and on lands regulated by the conservation
authority under the Development, Interference with

Wetlands and Alterations to Shorelines and
Watercourses Regulations.
This regulation governs hazardous areas, important
natural lands and features which protect people and
property from potential flooding and erosion.
Types of lands under that umbrella include:
• Ravines, valleys and steep slopes (escarpment
areas);
• Wetlands (including swamps, marshes, bogs, fens
and ponds, but not including periodically soaked or wet
land that is used for agricultural purposes);
• Any river, creek, floodplain or valley land lake shore-
lines.
The maps, aerial photos and data sets will assist
municipalities in their decision-making around environ-
mental issues.
The powerful new mapping and data tools now also
provide a way to also get this information to residents of
the watershed and those abroad.
