Astronomy Night at Hallett ProvincialWildlifeArea
By Scot Russell
OUTREACH CO-ORDINATOR, FRIENDS OF HULLETT
HULLETT — The Hullett Provincial Wildlife Area is
presenting Astronomy Night Saturday.
The property has many locations where you're able to
view the sky as it was meant to be viewed — under
clear, pristine and dark country skies. The event starts
at 8 p.m. Saturday. Everyone is welcome.
View the Perseid Meteor Shower, where, during its
peak, an average of 90 meteors per hour blaze through
the skies; perhaps viewers will even see a bolide or 'fire-
ball' meteor Saturday. See examples of star clusters,
nebulae and even galaxies.
Plus, Jupiter makes a fine evening showing in the tele-
scope — experience the view of another planet for the
first time. Bring your whole family plus your binoculars
with you and if you have a telescope, bring it along.
We will have a 4.25" reflector and 9.25" Schmidt-
Cassegrain telescope on hand for public viewing (weath-
er permitting) as well. For more information, stay tuned
to the website at www.hullettmarsh.org
The universe is a very large place. For instance, imag-
ine the Earth is the size of a baseball (approx three inch-
es in diameter), the Moon (240,000 miles away) will be
the size of a ping-pong ball, lying 6.7 feet away from the
baseball. The sun, in this scale model, will be a huge
ball, 26 feet in diameter a half a mile away.
Now, if you will, consider the Sun being the size of a
baseball. Jupiter, the largest planet, is then a cherry pit,
260 feet away, while Pluto is a grain of sand 1,050 feet
away (that's the length of 3.5 football fields!).
To really blow your mind now, the nearest star to us
(Alpha Centauri) would be another baseball a whopping
1,460 miles away — this is the distance from Hallett to
Vancouver. It really is hard to even fathom the immense
depths of space.
Have you ever looked through a telescope? Have you
seen a bright meteor streak through a clear, dark sky?
See both for yourself Saturday night at Hullett's
Astronomy Night.
Good websites to check out are Sky and Telescope
(www.skyandtelescope.com) and Astronomy Magazine
(www. astronomy. com), and the Royal Astronomical
Society of Canada's webpage at www.rasc.ca
We will meet at 8 p.m. at the Main Viewing Stand at
40905 Summerhill Rd. This is a weather dependent
event; if it's raining, we'll do it another night.
Make sure to prepare for the evening — bring insect
repellent and warm clothing as even in the summer it
can get chilly at night.
